Samsung Galaxy Tab and Android experience

My Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab was finally here.

This is the unlocked European edition. I decided to get this version so that I will not need to hack it to use it as a ccellphone so that one device will function as both a cellphone and a tablet computer.

First, it is a surprise that the default language is something that I do not recognize! So the first task is to reset the language to English. After some guess work, I managed to do it.

Now is the second problem. Usually, when you first turn on an Android device, it will walk you through some initially setups. Now I missed the initial setup process due to the language problem, I have to guess what I need to set up before using it. After some guessing (since I have no previous experience with Android), I was able to access my gmail and my exchange acount (for emails, calendar, contacts). Synching was a little confusing, because there are two places: one is synch, the other is synchronize.

However, I am still have a question about synching: The longest time period for synching is 1 month. So my calendar is only showing entries for Dec. 2010. Nothing from Jan. 2011 is showing up yet.

So my first question for existing Android users is: is it possible to have it synch for 2 or 3 months instead?

Overall, I am quite happy with it. The operating system makes much more sense than Windows Phone 7 (I have been using previous editions of Windows Mobile cellphones). I was happily surprised that emails are downloaded as soon as exchange server receives them because wifi is kept on when the screen is turned off (and wifi is not using much battery energy). And being able to synch to multiple email accounts is also very nice.

You can hold this tab to your ear to make phone calls. You will need to turn down the speaker volume so that you will not be deafened.

Flash animation is slow as expected, but slow is inifinitely better than none.

There is still a lot to learn with this new (to me) operating system.

Some thought about Microsoft Windows. MS should cut off some of the fat from Windows 7 to make a Windows Tablet edition (similar to the old Windows CE), so that regular Windows software can be installed (such as MS office). But Microsoft seems to have lost its sense of direction lately. It does not try to create Windows Tablet edition, and made a major blunder in making the Windows cellphone edition. null
