Let me not to marriage of true minds admit impediments

(2007-05-13 07:46:01) 下一个
日前,遇到一位 professional actor, 跟我讨论起沙氏比亚的哈姆雷特。并用其中的"I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw." 做现实吡喻,It beats me.  不过,它到使我记起一些以前喜欢的沙氏比亚的Sonnet。于是从网上找来一首,贴在这里。

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
     That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

                                                                    - William Shakespeare, Sonnet 116

Yes, I've seen "the joy luck club" too, and like it. It makes people think about culture difference, right to the points.

flamenco_girl,

yes,Indy is the short name for Indianapolis. I am not sure about the musical school. Our conference was attached to the medical center.

I haven't read any of Amy Tan's novel. But i watched the movie"the joy luck club", revised based on her novel. It is a good movie, about the life of four chinese women and their daughters in the States. You know, the challenge of different culture and successful survival. Thanks for recommending another one. If I had time , I would read it. I am lazy to find books by myself but preferring recommended ones. hehe...

I like listening to books on CD on my way to school in the morning. However, my joy was heartlessly deprived several weeks ago. because I was forced to donate my ipod to someone called thief. Very frustrated. well, time to get a better one.

have a nice night.

Melly, Is Indy the Indianapolis? They have a good music school in the university. It sounds like a very interesting setting for your hotel (yes, very American way).

Shakespeare's plays are very hard for me too, but the dialogues "sounds" so good. I enjoyed listening, though I can't fully understand them. I wish I could have more time reading interesting books nowadays. A friend of mine gave me two books by Amy Tan, I started one "The Hundred Secret Sense", but never found time continue, though I do like the book and her writing style. I found that audio books are good to listen before sleep.

Hi, flamenco_girl,

Thanks for asking. Yes, I did have a good trip. The conference was exciting. I learned a lot about my field. The city Indy is just an ordinary american city, no fun. I wish the meeting were held in other citys such as SAF or Boston (I have been to DC, so I ruled it out, hehe...). The fun part was the hotel, which was renovated from a train station. Two real old trains in the hotel serve as guest rooms now. As a matter of fact, there still scheduled trains pass through the hotel now. I heard rumbling at night. Some guests did complain the unavoidable noise. Very unique. Americans are good at renovating old buildings for new appilcations.

Speaking of Shakespeare's work, to be honest, I read little. I don't like old English though his books are classic and famous. Even if I knew every word, I probably couldn't understand completely the meaning of the whole story. You are right, that is why people have to do some research and why his books are immortal. I like some contemporary works of novel. I borrowed Tropic of Cancer before I left for Indy. However, I don't think I am gonna finish it for I have not get the main idea though I have read about 1/4 of it. The book was written in 1930s, maybe still too old for me. hehe...Sorry, for an English beginner, I am sort of picky. hehe...I did love The Kite Runner, which I read 3 months ago. It is about the friendship between the master and his servant in a rich family through 3 generations. A very good one,I think.

ha, too much. should have saved some for next time. hehe...

Have a good night.
flamenco_girl 回复 悄悄话 Hey Melly, welcome back. Had a nice trip?

"I am but mad north-north-west: ..." seems mean Hamlet was not really mad. At that time, he was acting mad for ploting a revenge, and sent signal to his friends that he was not really mad/crazy. If Shakespeare's work were easy to understand, there wouldn't be so many Shakespeare studies, isn't it? His Sonnets are easier to understand comparably. I was the same as you, used dictionary and read over and over again. For this one, it seems to me to be 赞美真爱的至高无尚和永恒。It feels good by reading over and over again, luodly, isn't it?

The professional actor asked me "Are you mad north-north-west? Sometimes I think I am". I answered "I think I'm not mad at anything at this moment". I don't really know what he means, didn't ask either.

What does it mean? Sorry for my ignorant.
melly 回复 悄悄话 I know little about Shakespeare's Sonnets.your post gave me a chane to learn. I couldn't understand it completely until I read the chinese translation.

It is a beautiful poem. yes, love is the star for everyone and love is precious.
