普通人在每十分钟的谈话中会说三个谎话，但Cal Lightman博士却可通过分析一个人的脸、身体、声音和话语来察觉真相。他是世界领先的侦探专家，一个研究面部表情和随机肢体语言来探索你是否撒谎以及为何撒谎的科学家。当一个人不经意地耸肩，搓手，或者扬起下嘴唇，Lightman就知道他们在撒谎。通过对脸部表情的分析，他可以读懂一个人的感情－－从隐藏在心底的憎恶，到性的冲动，再到嫉妒。但是Lightman深知，他的科学能力对于他的私人生活来说既是天赐之福，也是诅咒。这不难理解－－如果你也有他的这种能力，你会发现家人或友人之间互相欺骗，会让你感觉自己在面对诈骗犯与陌生人。

Cal Lightman领导着当地一家名叫 "Lightman集团" 的私人研究机构，只要政府、FBI、当地警察、法律公司、大型企业乃至于个人在寻找某件事真相的过程中遇到了什么麻烦，Cal Lightman和他的研究小组就会前来帮忙。从某种意义上来说，这种设定很像FOX另一部 "科学家主导调查过程" 的罪案剧－－《Bones》。

本剧根据真人真事改编。本剧的灵感来源于行为学专家Paul Ekman博士的真实研究，他能够发掘深埋在人类脸部、身体和声音里的线索，然后将犯罪调查中的真实与谎言昭示天下。Ekman博士将担任本剧的特别顾问。由《The Evidence》的编剧和《24》、《Arrested Development》的执行制片人Samuel Baum打造。在《海上钢琴师》《落水狗》《绿巨人2》中均有出色表现的Tim Roth也将延续自己极富个性的表演。
