Day 4 Today's original plan was to drive through east Iceland. Since we didn't have a hotel booked for tonight, we didn't care how far we got to. But after we got up, the weather looked promising, so we decided to go back to Jökulsárlón again before driving north, and it really paid off.
1. Along the Ring Road.
2. We reached Jökulsárlón around 9:00 am, and the tour buses were already there.
3. Jökulsárlón again.
4. There seemed to be a lot more icebergs in the lagoon today than yesterday.
5. Jökulsárlón.
6. Jökulsárlón.
7. Jökulsárlón.
8. Jökulsárlón.
9. Jökulsárlón.
10. Jökulsárlón.
It was so hard to peel ourselves away from a beautiful place like this.
Considering how much time we still had left for the day, we decided to drive to Egilsstaðir, the largest town in east Iceland (population 2,300), to find a place to stay for tonight. The drive was rougher than before. Several sections of the Ring Road was unpaved.
11. A fish farm we saw along the Ring Road.
12. Icelandic horses. They were everywhere just like the sheep.
We reached Egilsstaðir around 5:30 pm. We stopped at an information office to ask where we could find a place to stay. It turned out that they also ran the campsite next to it, and they had two cottages to rent, both were still available (Isn't it great to travel off season!). One charges 10,000 ISK which has its own bathroom and kitchenette, the other charges 2,500 ISK/bed, there are 4 beds inside, each has a privacy curtain around it. We took the first one.
13. Our cottage.
14. The outside has a kitchenette and a futon (on the left, not shown here).
15. The inside has bunk beds and bathroom with shower.
16. The other cottage which rents individual bed out. There is no bathroom inside.
