My 14 Years in the US
1992 Came to the US at the age of 21, enrolled in a less
popular Master's degree program in an Ivy League School.
The Research Assistantship paid my tuition and $1,300 a
month for my living expenses.
1994 Graduated with a Master's degree. Worked for a professor in
the School. First year pay check: $23,000 (that paycheck
was an insult to a paycheck, I did not need to pay tax
though)
1995 Quitted that school job, enrolled in a MBA program in an
Ivy League B-School.
1997 Graduated with a few Wall Street job offers. First year
pay: $75,000 +
$50,000 bonus.
2000 Quitted that sell-side job to join a hedge fund. First year
pay: $150,000 + 500,000 bonus
2003 Became head of the Group. Year end bonus went at $2 million
2004 Year end bonus moved up a bit at $2.5 million
2005 Joined another hedge fund as a partner. Bad year for hedge
fund, bonus went down to $1 million
2006 Breakthrough year, achieved 27% return on a 1+ billion
book. Year end bonus went to eight-figure the first time:
14 million.
Net asset at $13 million as of now, would like to have $100 million, and then will move back to China to take bigger risk.
