美国著名大学探寻笔记

常青藤八所大学有七所建立于美国独立之前。另一所Cornell University 是1865年建立的。九所殖民地时期的大学中另两所是公立大学College of William and Mary， 和Rutgers University。这两所大学也是非常优秀的大学。仅仅靠历史的积淀，这些常青藤大学也可称得上杰出了。

还有几所大学，仅仅是因为她们取得的成就（培养出来的人才，和获得的科研，学术成果），不容质疑的成为顶尖大学。其中MIT（还有Johns Hopkins University）就因为地理位置的缘故，常常被误认成常青藤大学。小小的加州理工更是以其科研成就和培养出的人才与东部的MIT齐名。中西部的芝加哥大学，东南部的杜克大学，南部的莱斯大学也是顶尖的，更何况她们都是区域的领袖。西部的斯坦福和伯克利不光是学界的领袖，更是企业创新发展的主动力，推动整个区域，乃至全球的经济。

美国中南部的带着浓厚的乡土风情，乡村音乐之都田纳西纳什维尔有个著名大学Vanderbilt University，密西西比河岸上的圣路易斯是美国密西西比文化的中心，著名的Washington University就坐落在这里。印第安纳州的University of Notre Dame是美国著名的天主教大学。

还有一些著名大学是以她的某个顶级学科出名，例如以计算机科学出名Pittsburgh的Carnegie Melon University，和以政治学和公共政策等社会科学出名的首都哥伦比亚特区的Georgetown University。

美国大学往往都有不少的竞争者或合作者。而顶尖大学的这些对象大都是实力不相上下的著名大学。例如，芝加哥大学的邻居西北大学，杜克大学南部梯队有Emory University和Wake Forest University，紧随哈佛和MIT的波斯顿地区的大学Tufts University。New York University 挑战哥伦比亚，共享着百老汇，和华尔街，还有洛杉矶的University of Southern California与UCLA相争，寻找好莱坞的机会，她们都拥有得天独厚的大都市的文化环境。

美国还有象伯克利一样众多的著名公立大学，尽管她们在美国国内排名往往被私立大学所压制，但是她们的实力却是公认的，在国外更是声名远播。与伯克利同在加大系统的就有UCLA，UC San Diego，UC Santa Barbara等。其他传统名校有University of Washington （Seattle），University of Colorado （Boulder），University of Minnesota， University of Michigan， University of Illinois（Urbana Champaign），University of Wisconsin（Madison）， Purdue University，University of Virginia，University of Maryland（College Park），University of North Carolina（Chapel Hill），Georgia Institute of Technology，University of Texas（Austin）等等， 数目众多。

另一方面，美国国内的排名更重视本科教育，所以小型的文理学院往往压过公立大学。小型文理学院的成就更多是表现在她培养出的优秀学生上。如Williams College，就培养了众多学者名人，有诺贝尔奖，菲尔兹奖，普里兹奖获得者，有总统，部长，国会议员，州长，还有五百强公司的主管，和众多的亿万富翁。排在前十位的文理学院的实力大多体现在人才的养成上。有的学生不太喜欢这些小学校，担心资源不象大学校那么丰富，选课范围太窄。其实，这些学院大多与临近的大学结成盟校，可以交叉选课。Amherst college，Smith College就和同城的其他三校结成五校联盟（Five College Consortium）。著名女校Wellesley College 也与MIT，哈佛合作，并联合为学生提供MIT的科学和Wellesley 的艺术双学位。南加州的Claremont Colleges有五个著名的文理学院组成：Pomona，Harvey Mudd等，个个都享有盛名。五校校园连成一片，共享课程和设施，模仿牛津式的学院型大学体系。

在美国升大学，各种机会都很多。只要不是只锁定某个单一目标，这么多顶尖学校中任何一个适合自己的都会让自己和家人自豪。

Harvard — The kids with the richest parents.

MIT — The smartest kids in the room.

Stanford — Creative kids who are going to be rich.

Brown — The most liberal kids in the room.

Columbia — Kids who are smart, but want to go out in New York.

University of Pennsylvania — Kids who want to be the next partners at McKinsey.

Yale — Kids who are going to sue you in the future.

Princeton — The smartest kids (besides MIT).

Dartmouth — The outdoor-sy kids.

Cornell — Kids who were rejected everywhere else.
