试译William Blake的 “Auguries of Innocence”




【早上拿本诗集翻到William Blake的 “Auguries of Innocence”那三页,让扎扎读了一遍,看看他是否innocence依然/有共鸣/露灵气/显悟性什么的。这回倒是没让老爸太失望,这小子乖乖从 头到尾通读一遍,只不过中间打了几个不大不小的哈欠(可以想见,现在的孩子身心有多累,一日之晨就这样,一生之初就这样)。就这样,我没好意思提:昨天和 今天这两个凌晨,扎爸都把时间花在试译这首诗成中文了。当然,又tmd是打油体,实在是:心有敬而力不足,太不成敬意了!
这首诗的开头前四句,现在估计是妇孺皆知,扎扎爸以前就收集了不下几十种译法。但是全诗的完整翻译,殊为遗憾,没见过几种。八十年代初上大学时限于英文和 智识水平,本能地喜欢这诗,却读之如雾里看花隔云看天不甚了了。现在有胆动笔试译,除勇气可嘉外,大概英文特别是智识上真有长进;这样转念一想,置笔后难 免有些沮丧的打油诗人,不禁有些欣喜了(总算体会了一回“悲欣交集”)。】

知更小鸟关进笼    A robin redbreast in a cage
整个天庭震怒中。    Puts all heaven in a rage.

大小鸽子挤鸽楼    A dove-house fill’d with doves and pigeons
每间地狱齐颤抖。    Shudders hell thro’ all its regions.
主人门前狗饿殍    A dog starv’d at his master’s gate
预示国家要毁掉。    Predicts the ruin of the state.

虐待马匹于路迢  A horse misused upon the road
吁达天庭血冤报。    Calls to heaven for human blood.
猎杀野兔声声叫    Each outcry of the hunted hare
人脑纤维将撕爆。    A fibre from the brain does tear.

一只云雀伤翅膀,    A skylark wounded in the wing,
就有天使停歌唱。    A cherubim does cease to sing.
斗鸡利爪披甲打    The game-cock clipt and arm’d for fight
初升太阳见害怕。    Does the rising sun affright.
    
豺狼狮子嚎吼声    Every wolf’s and lion’s howl
唤起地狱一冤魂。    Raises from hell a human soul.

野鹿四处去漫游,    The wild deer, wand’ring here and there,
人之灵魂得保守。    Keeps the human soul from care.
羊羔受虐引争吵,    The lamb misus’d breeds public strife,
却还原谅屠夫刀。    And yet forgives the butcher’s knife.

蝙蝠低飞黄昏早    The bat that flits at close of eve
掠过呆头不信道。    Has left the brain that won’t believe.
猫头鹰在夜里叫    The owl that calls upon the night
不信道者惊恐招。    Speaks the unbeliever’s fright.

谁敢伤害小鹪鹩    He who shall hurt the little wren
此公无人再爱着。    Shall never be belov’d by men.
谁惹公牛怒咆哮    He who the ox to wrath has mov’d
这男无女会来找。    Shall never be by woman lov’d.

妄为男孩蝇杀了    The wanton boy that kills the fly
蜘蛛敌意顿感到。    Shall feel the spider’s enmity.
折磨金龟小虫灵    He who torments the chafer’s sprite
罚编凉亭夜夜深。    Weaves a bower in endless night.

树叶上爬毛毛虫    The caterpillar on the leaf
重蹈母辙忧心忡。    Repeats to thee thy mother’s grief.

最后审判临近中。    For the last judgment draweth nigh.

谁驯骏马战场用    He who shall train the horse to war
让他遇阻北极熊。    Shall never pass the polar bar.
寡妇乞丐猫狗有,    The beggar’s dog and widow’s cat,
喂食它们你增肉。    Feed them and thou wilt grow fat.

蚊蚋夏天小调哼    The gnat that sings his summer’s song
因人诽谤舌毒喷。    Poison gets from slander’s tongue.
蛇蟒蝾螈毒汁吐    The poison of the snake and newt
是人嫉妒脚汗出。    Is the sweat of envy’s foot.

产蜜野蜂有毒针    The poison of the honey bee
那是艺人醋意生。    Is the artist’s jealousy.
    
乞丐破布王子袍    The prince’s robes and beggar’s rags
财迷袋囊毒菌落。    Are toadstools on the miser’s bags.
真理若以恶意告    A truth that’s told with bad intent
甚于谎言你能找。    Beats all the lies you can invent.

对是对来错是错;    It is right it should be so;
男儿生来皆忧乐;    Man was made for joy and woe;
及时知此智慧者    And when this we rightly know,
大千世界信步踱。    Thro’ the world we safely go.

忧乐荣辱细织作,    Joy and woe are woven fine,
圣洁灵魂外衣得。    A clothing for the soul divine.
哀楚热望每临着   Under every grief and pine
喜乐系着绸绳跑。    Runs a joy with silken twine.

襁褓乐队声势浩,    
一婴啼叫音更高;The babe is more than swaddling bands;
纵观各地人栖着    Throughout all these human lands
天生双手工具造    Tools were made, and born were hands,
所有农夫都知晓。    Every farmer understands.
眼珠有泪滴滴抛    Every tear from every eye
化成婴孩永恒耀。    Becomes a babe in eternity;

女子聪颖悟此道,    This is caught by females bright,
悟道她更喜眉梢。    And return’d to its own delight.
羊咩狗吠野兽哮    The bleat, the bark, bellow, and roar,
天庭堤岸拍波涛。    Are waves that beat on heaven’s shore.

教鞭底下孩哭叫    The babe that weeps the rod beneath
信至冥府仇将报。    Writes revenge in realms of death.
乞丐破袍冷风飘,    The beggar’s rags, fluttering in air,
天堂泪珠撒破袍。    Does to rags the heavens tear.

士兵手持枪剑抖    The soldier, arm’d with sword and gun,
惊吓夏天太阳走。    Palsied strikes the summer’s sun.
穷汉一币值更高    The poor man’s farthing is worth more
非洲金岸比不了。    Than all the gold on Afric’s shore.

一螨捏毙工匠手    One mite wrung from the lab’rer’s hands
财迷地产快收售;    Shall buy and sell the miser’s lands;
或螨受更高关照    Or, if protected from on high,
全国房产买卖倒。    Does that whole nation sell and buy.

谁若嘲笑娃信条    He who mocks the infant’s faith
定受讥讽临终老。    Shall be mock’d in age and death.
教唆孩子疑惑道        He who shall teach the child to doubt
将入乱坟无处逃。    The rotting grave shall ne’er get out.

谁若尊重孩信条    He who respects the infant’s faith
胜过地狱死不了。     Triumphs over hell and death.
小孩玩具老人理    The child’s toys and the old man’s reasons
人生两季硕果积。    Are the fruits of the two seasons.

人若腼腆坐提问,   The questioner, who sits so sly,
将来难学回答人。    Shall never know how to reply.
谁能数言解疑惶,    He who replies to words of doubt
就是点亮知识光。    Doth put the light of knowledge out.

最强毒药古今算    The strongest poison ever known
来自恺撒月桂冠。    Came from Caesar’s laurel crown.
人类变形因虚无    Nought can deform the human race
铠甲支架常锈蛀。    Like to the armour’s iron brace.

黄金宝石饰铁犁,    When gold and gems adorn the plow,
和平艺术羡雕弓。    To peaceful arts shall envy bow.
谜语或者蟋蟀鸣,    A riddle, or the cricket’s cry,
得体答案现疑问。    Is to doubt a fit reply.

蚁爬一寸鹰飞里    The emmet’s inch and eagle’s mile
跛足哲学笑嘻嘻。    Make lame philosophy to smile.
亲眼所见还疑问   He who doubts from what he sees
随你做啥不相信。    Will ne’er believe, do what you please.

日月若起疑惑心,    If the sun and moon should doubt,
立马出来耀天庭。    They’d immediately go out.
人有激情佳作有,    To be in a passion you good may do,
激情控人不妙由。    But no good if a passion is in you.

娼妓赌徒合法搞    The whore and gambler, by the state
国运根基早动摇。    Licensed, build that nation’s fate.
妓女沿路满街叫    The harlot’s cry from street to street
英伦尸布织编好。    Shall weave old England’s winding-sheet.

赢的欢呼输诅咒    The winner’s shout, the loser’s curse,    
英伦柩前舞不休。Dance before dead England’s hearse.

每一夜来每一晨    Every night and every morn
有些悲惨人降生。    Some to misery are born,
每一晨来每一晚,   Every morn and every night
有些人生喜乐欢。    Some are born to sweet delight.

 有些人生喜乐欢,   Some are born to sweet delight,
有些人生夜漫漫。    Some are born to endless night.

我等注定信谎言    We are led to believe a lie
如若不用眼睛看,    When we see not thro’ the eye,
黑夜生眼也灭幻,    Which was born in a night to perish in a night,
灵魂遇光睡安然。    When the soul slept in beams of light.

上帝显现祂是光,   God appears, and God is light,
照亮卑魂暗夜藏。    To those poor souls who dwell in night;
上帝显现人模样    But does a human form display
示范众人栖于光。    To those who dwell in realms of day.
