INT. LIVING ROOM -- ROSE'S HOUSE -- DAY

Hans holds Anna's hands to his heart. They look into each other's eyes. Hans cups Anna's face in his hands and kisses her. Anna places her arms around Hans' waist and pulls him closer.

HANS

Now we've got our passage booked on the vessel for Shanghai. We'll be together, no doubt.

ANNA

It's so fascinating to cross the vast Pacific together with you.

HANS

Moreover, I can take care of your parents all the way through.

ANNA

But, uh, what about Rose?

HANS

What do you mean?

ANNA

I saw you and Rose riding the motorcycle.

HANS

Rose and me? We're friends.

ANNA

She has a crush on you.

HANS

You're my only love, Anna. Never doubt my love for you.

ANNA

Never.

HANS

Promise?

ANNA

Promise.

Anna leans her head against Hans' chest and closes her eyes. Hans pats her on the back and caresses her hair.

INT. DOORWAY -- KITCHEN -- DAY

Anna leans against the wall, watching Rose and Hans talking in the kitchen.

ANNA'S POV THROUGH DOOR

Rose washes dishes and Hans helps dry them.

ROSE

You'll leave tomorrow.

HANS

Please take good care of yourself.

Rose stops washing and faces Hans. Hans wipes tears off Rose's cheeks.

ROSE

Hold me, one more time. Just one last time, please.

Hans takes Rose in his arms.

HANS

I'm sorry.

Rose rubs her eyes with the back of her hand.

BACK TO SCENE

A tear slides down Anna's cheek. She and Rose smile at each other.

INT. LIVING ROOM -- DAY

Anna and Emilia hustle about preparing for final departure. Emilia wraps porcelain and crystal pieces in tissue paper and puts them into trunks and valises.

Anna packs her clothes. She takes Hans' portrait out of her painting folder, smiles and tucks it between the clothes in her suitcase.

EXT. ROSE'S HOUSE -- DAY

Rose parks a rental car in front of the gate.

While Hans loads the luggage into the car, he sees a squad of Nazi soldiers heading toward the house. Rose notices the approaching Nazis too.

HANS

(anxiously)

Come on, hurry up, drive Anna's family to the station, right now.

ROSE

But, Hans, how about you?

HANS

Don't worry about me. I can deal with them. Go, go, go, please go. Hurry.

Hans heads toward the Nazi soldiers led by Walter.

EXT. STREET -- NEAR ROSE'S HOUSE -- DAY

Hans runs in the opposite direction of Rose's house to distract the Nazi soldiers. After a long chase, Walter and the other Nazi soldiers finally catch Hans.

HANS

(disdaining)

You damned bastards. Bloody murderers.

Hans is gagged and handcuffed. Walter pushes Hans into his squad car and drives away.

EXT. ROSE'S HOUSE -- DAY

Rose hurries Anna, Mark and Emilia into the car and races away.

INT. CAR -- DAY

Rose drives, speeding up.

ANNA

Rose, where's Hans? Where's he? He was supposed to go with us.

ROSE

Hans let me tell you he'd meet you very soon.

EXT. RAILWAY STATION -- DAY

Uniformed OFFICERS shout out indistinct commands in German. A train chugs into the station, the engine rumbling and hissing. On the platform, Mark, Emilia, Anna and Rose huddle together with a crowd of PASSENGERS.

ANNA

Rose, did Hans change his mind, uh, for your sake?

ROSE

No, Anna, never.

ANNA

Why isn't he here? Tell me the truth, please.

ROSE

The Nazis have taken him away.

EMILIA

So that's what he was doing. He knew he'd be arrested but he wanted to...

MARK

...save us. God's Mercy, may God help him.

In despair, Anna bites her lips and bursts into tears, her chest heaving with sadness.

ANNA

Oh, no, I can't go. I can't leave now. I can't leave Hans behind.

ROSE

Listen to me, Anna, you must leave as planned. You need to take care of your parents. I'll get Hans out. I'll get him out. I promise.

Rose hugs Anna and pats her on the back.

In the queue, PASSENGERS hold out their tickets and passports for inspection. Dr. Behr, the four musicians - Violinist, Flutist, Trumpeter and Drummer, Jacob and his daughter Catalina are among the passengers. All of them look somber but composed.

An OFFICER reviews the pictures on the passports, peers closely at Mark, Emilia and Anna one by one, and then motions them to step forward to the train.

Her eyes following Anna's family, Rose wipes her tears as she melts into the crowd.

INT. TRAIN -- DAY

Anna and her parents slide into seats and tuck away their luggage. Anne leans out of the window of their compartment, looking for Rose.

EXT. RAILWAY STATION -- DAY

Rose stands on the platform and waves. Anna and her parents catch sight of her and wave back.

Commands are yelled. Doors are slid. Whistles blow. The engine steams. In a mechanical rhythm, the train leaves, carrying away hundreds of Jewish refugees.

From the windows of the rumbling train, appear the faces of Anna and her parents, Dr. Behr, the four musicians, Jacob and Catalina.
