Wealthiest Counties in the Country
The richest counties in the U.S. surround its capitol in Washington, DC.

While affluent areas surround New York City and San Francisco, Fairfax County, Va., Loudoun County, Va., and Howard County, Md., top the list of wealthiest counties, based on median household income data from the 2006 census.

In Fairfax, median income is $100,318 a year; Loudoun households pull down $99,371 a year; Howard residents follow at $92,260.

"The general process of suburbanization is, the richer you are, the more likely you are to move to the suburbs," says Julie Martin, a senior demographer for the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.

In the case of Washington, D.C., she says that well-paid government employees, and the area's lobbyists, lawyers and other tangential personnel, are "suburbanizing like mad" and in doing so have created a "feedback loop," driving more money into the area's suburbs by populating them with higher-priced homes and better school systems.

Here’s the top-10 list of America’s richest counties and their media incomes:

  1. Fairfax County, Va.: $100,318
  2. Loudoun County, Va.: $99,371
  3. Howard County, Md.: $94,260
  4. Hunterdon Country, N.J.: $93,297
  5. Douglas County, Colo.: $92,125
  6. Somerset County, N.J.: $91,688
  7. Morris County, N.J.: $89,587
  8. Montgomery County, Md.: $87,624
  9. Arlington County, Va.: $87,350
  10. Nassau County, N.Y.: $85,994
