Tang was shocked. She said, “Madame Wang, take them for a bath. Take off their clothes and throw them away. Call up Mr. Song to get some new cotton clothes for them for the time being. No, you and some maidservants go to do that.”

Dai and her sons had a pleasant bath and put on new warm cotton clothes. The barber was in the sitting room, waiting to cut the boys’ hair. Then, they sat down at a big table, where there was rice, chicken and pork. They ate the nice food and wore the warm dresses, feeling warm and happy in their hearts. In the sitting-room next to the dining-hall, Tang was playing the wonderful organ, singing at the same time:

Lord Jesus comes to the world, and loves people.

Lord saves human beings and appears in the shape of a man.

The angels sing praise to Him.

The Lord is greater even than the sea.

(Amen!)

She sang so beautifully and movingly. It was hard for people not to be moved. Was there God in the world, who would help those in need? Maybe there was. Dai thought.

At this time, Madame Wang came with Zhang Yan in her arms. Zhang Yan found Dai and the two boys dressed in new clothes. He got bolder, but remained in Madame Wang’s arms. Then, Madame Wang remarked, “Call her aunt, Zhang Yan.”

Zhang Yan greeted, “Aunt.”

Madame Wang went on, “They are your cousins. Call them cousins!”

Zhang Yan hesitated for a while before he called them cousins. Dai Min was moved, wiping her tears with sleeves. Zhang Yan got down. He placed a chair between the two boys and sat there. He looked at them and felt extremely happy.

Zhang Yong ate and blinked at Zhang Yan. He touched his tender face, asking, “Dear cousin, do you remember the year when we came and lit firecrackers together in the garden?”

Zhang Yan shook his head.

Zhang Yong said, “Oh, you forgot it. I remember it. That was a happy day.”

Madame Wang added, “It’s not his fault. He was too young then.”

Zhang Yan said, “I can’t recall the past. But I am now at school and won’t forget things later.” He found the two boys eating tastefully, and said, “Dear Madame Wang, I’d like to eat.”

Madame Wang remarked, “What a nice boy! Join them in the meal.”

A maidservant fetched a small bowl for Zhang Yan. But Zhang Yan said, “No, I need a bowl as large as my cousins’.”

Madame Wang was delighted, replying, “What a good boy! You could eat by yourself later without my feeding you.”

Madame Wang saw the two boys eat tastefully, and said it was a lucky day. She went on, “This is Christmas Eve. What a coincidence!”

Dai asked, “What is Christmas Eve?” Is it a festival?”

Madame Wang answered, “I’m not familiar with it, either. It’s a foreign festival on the 24th of December. Tomorrow is December 25, Christmas. The foreigners believe in Jesus. It’s said that today is Jesus’ birthday. Hence, tomorrow is Christmas. There will be more activities tomorrow. Christmas Eve is like the eve of the Chinese New Year, and Christmas is like the Chinese New Year.”

Dai nodded as if understanding, asking, “Where is Jesus from? Why do so many people like him?”

Madame Wang said she knew little about that, because she was not a Christian. Then, Zhang Yan asked, “Dear Madame Wang, why not give some ice cream to my cousins?”

Zhang Yan was a kind-hearted boy. The two boys had been hoping to have a taste of ice cream. They had seen other people eat ice cream before and envied them very much.

Madame Wang said that it was a cold day, unsuitable for eating ice cream. But Zhang Yan insisted on inviting his cousins for a try since his classmates would have a try of it tomorrow.

Madame Wang was worried about Zhang Yan’s health. Zhang Yan knew that and said he would not have it himself.

Soon, the maidservant came with ice cream. Zhang Yong was younger of the two brothers, and it was easier for him to talk with Zhang Yan. He asked Zhang Yan while eating ice cream:

“Which grade are you in?”

Zhang Yan replied, “Grade 1.”

Zhang Yong asked, “How old are you?”

Zhang Yan replied, “5. How about you?”

Zhang Yong bent his head down, answering, “I dropped out of school in Grade 2.”

Zhang Yan gave a sigh, “What a pity!”

Dai Min caught Zhang Yan’s hands as if looking for help, “Dear nephew, do you like your cousins?”

Zhang Yan answered, “Yes.”

“Would you like them to stay here?”

“Mom says that you are sent here by Lord. She has asked Uncle Yang to arrange two bedrooms for you, one for you my aunt, and the other for my two cousins.”

Dai was moved and hugged Zhang Yan, murmuring, “What a kind mom you have!”

Zhang Yan did not need to go to school that afternoon. He stayed with the two cousins. He helped them tidy up their room and took them to visit his father’s study. They also searched for gifts in a Christmas tree decorated with all kinds of things. They got some fruits and candies. There was no blame or contempt in the house. It was peaceful. The family of the Kuomintang general lived a happy life in the early days of new China.

At night, they could hear the bellman tell people the time. Dai and her sons lay on the warm beds, and heard the sweet organ of Tang Weiqi, who was gathering with the other Christians and waiting for the arrival of Jesus. A voice rang up in the peaceful air:

“Dear Lord!”

Dai and her sons got peace and happiness for the time being.
