莎士比亚十四行诗第一首

FROM fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content
And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

莎士比亚的十四行诗集，一共有154首，其中第1首到第126首是献给一个朋友的，第127首到152首是写给一个黑女郎的。这154首是在1609年发表的，咱们首先看一下第一首。14行诗就是一14行，每一行都有十个音节，整个的十四行诗都是以abab cdcd efef gg这个韵脚方式来排列的。
首先看第一行：

FROM fairest creatures we desire increase,

从 第一句开始 “fairest” 意思就是最漂亮的，creatures意思就是活着的（living things），不仅仅是动物，指所有活着的(not just animals)，increase是繁（procreation,reproduction）即是指下一代。这句话的意思是说我们要最美丽的生物不断的 繁殖下去。

That thereby beauty's rose might never die,

第二句的第一个字是that，这个that的意思是so that，thereby就是through increase的意思，rose是指玫瑰，意思是说通过繁殖美丽的花朵才不会凋谢。

But as the riper should by time decease,

第三句 the riper是指成熟的果实，而by time是指到了时候，意思是说成熟的东西到了一定时候都不免于谢世。

His tender heir might bear his memory:

第四句 his是指他的朋友是位男性，tender是指年轻的（young，soft）bear his memory的意思就是指继续他的记忆（carry on his memory，bear his resemblance）也就是说看到他的子女，可以联想到他。

But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,

第五句 contracted 这个意思是指订婚的意思（betrothed），这句话就是说你和你的明亮的眼睛订了婚。

Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substantial fuel,

第六句中的self-substantial fuel 就是等于 fuel of your own substance 也就是说把自己的身体作为颜料，用自己身体作为燃料来燃烧你生命中的火焰，

Making a famine where abundance lies,

第七句中 famine就是饥荒的意思，意思就是说在丰收的地方造成了饥荒，也就是说自己太迷恋自己的容貌，没有把真正的美传下去。

Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.

第八句 foe是指敌人的意思，意思是说你自己是自己的敌人，对自己太残酷了，

Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament

第九句中fresh 就是指年轻的可爱的youthful, lovely，ornament 就是装饰品。

And only herald to the gaudy spring,

第十句的only就是unique, peerless，而herald to 就是 messenger of，gaudy = delightful, showy 意思就是说你是这个世界上年轻漂亮的装饰品。你是灿烂春天的无比的先驱者，也就是说你是唯一能为美丽春天开路的人。

Within thine own bud buriest thy content

第十一句中的bud = unopened flower, young man；content: 1. seed (offpsring that a future father contains); 2. happiness (of marriage)意思就是说你把你自己的幸福和子孙埋葬到了花蕊里面。

And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.

第十二句 churl: 1. boor, 2. miser makest waste in niggarding=destroys in miserliness这个意思就是说不让别人拥有，因为吝啬而糟蹋了自己。 niggarding = acting niggardly（吝啬）整句话的意思就是说温柔的吝啬鬼你不让别人拥有你的美丽，其实就是糟蹋自己。

Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

第十三句和第十四句 or else 是否则的意思，glutton就是贪夫，due = duty, debt这句话的意思就是说可怜这个世界吧 ，要不然你就成了贪夫！你和你的坟墓就把世界的债吞噬掉。（你欠的世界的债就是你的子女。）
