英文还有一个与"智慧"相关的名词叫intellect，意思是"知识的力量"或"知的能量"，从intellect又中化出形容词intellectual。无论是intelligent、intellect、还是intellectual，有点英文词汇的人都知道这三个词，尤其是intellectual，通常译成大家熟悉的"知识分子"，也有人翻作"识字分子"(副知识分子)。

 

但其实intelligent和intellect两词都来自同一个拉丁动词intelligere，意思等于understand。它的拉丁现在分词就是intelligent，而过去分词正是intellect。一个是正要去弄懂一些事情/事物(现在分词intelligent)，而弄懂事情是需要有些智慧的；另一个是已经懂得不少(过去分词intellect)，也就意味着积累了一定的知识，当然也就可以向知识分子靠拢了。

从语言角度讲，什么才是"弄懂理解"?  从拉丁intelligere的原意中，我们可以受到一些启发，它的原意是"收集整理信息"，只有收集到了信息才能对某事物进行理解、搞懂。所以，intelligent又有"收集信息"的意思，而intellectual则是"已经收足了一定的信息、有了一定程度的理解能力"。

 

知道那"臭名昭著"的美国中央情报局吗?  它的简称是CIA，全称呢?  Central Intelligence Agency。瞧见没有，这儿用的是intelligence -- 收集，要是换成Intellectual，那就说不通了:  Central Intellectual Agency -- 中央知识分子(管教)局?  再来一次文化大革命可能用得到这词。
