Bumpy night bus - 我和谷哥的夜车译文

Zhang Yong, a quite handsome young man in his thirties, was a teaching assistant at a local university. He just got married to a very beautiful wife.  People said that she used to be the beauty queen at a nearby school. The two felt in love on their own, and were now happy newlyweds. Although Zhang Yong was still young, he had accomplished a great deal academically. He was leading several research projects funded by the National Research Foundation, and was among the few talents the university was trying to groom.  So he was doing well in both life and career. His wife and he were a perfect match.

Zhang Yong's parents lived in the same city. His father was in poor health lately. As his parents' only child, he was a good and caring son. The day when this story happened, he took a bus to go to the other side of the river to see his father. He didn't leave his parents' place to go home until very late.   He thought that leaving late would allow him to spend more time with his parents. It wouldn't be as hot or crowded on the bus.  When he got on the bus, it was already past 11:00 pm. Even at that time, there were still a lot of passengers. There were no seats left on the bus, in fact it was full, with people standing everywhere, even though it was not as crowded as during the daytime.  Then people would usually be squeezed against one another with not even a place to stand.

The bus let off quite a few people at the next stop.  Having quite a few more stops to ride, he moved to the middle of the bus to find a less crowded place to stand.  A woman about his age followed him and stopped right in front of him.  When the bus came to its next stop near the long bridge, more people got on with very few getting off.  He was pushed closer to the woman, but still managed not to bump onto her and avoid any embarrassments.  However, what he didn't want to happen did. The woman did not seem to mind having body contact. When the bus was bumping along, she start to lean against him, seemingly on purpose.  As soon as he managed to move a little backwards, she immediately moved over. He didn't know what to do except for standing sideways. At that moment, he felt the woman turning around, not only facing him, but also putting her arm around his back. He didnt know what to do.  He thought about pushing her away, but decided not to after looking at her.  She was leaning against him with her eyes closed.  She looked very tired, and seemed to be just using him for some support. Instead of pushing her, he gently put one of his hands on her waist. Feeling that, the woman snuggled towards him. The small move incited a sense of warmth in Zhang Yong and he decided to hold her a little more tightly.  They looked like a couple on a late night excursion.  They didn't seem to care about being surrounded by other passengers.  In fact, they didn't need to because the whole bus was almost completely dark with only one light hanging in the front near the driver.  They held each other tighter and tighter as the bus bumped along the poorly lit street.  Her hair wiped on the tip of Zhang Yong's nose, giving out a faint smell of shampoo.   It was quite seducing, so much that he couldn't help but start to gently kiss her hair. Although the kiss was light, she seemed to have felt and reacted to it.  She pushed her full chest even closer to his, which made him aware that their summer clothes were so thin. After letting him gently kiss her hair for a few minutes, the woman lifted her head and gave him a brief kiss on the lips, and said: I have to get off here. He wanted to follow her, and  pushed his way to the door after her.  He kept his head down and did not make eye contact with anybody around him the entire time. Once off the bus, she didn't seem to even know him. She walked alone quickly in the opposite direction of the bus, and never turned her head to look at him. He stood there until her slender body slowly disappeared in the darkness. There and then, he knew that he would have still one more stop to go. However, he did not wait for the next bus. Instead, he hurriedly walked toward his own home in the direction opposite to the vanished woman.
