Before I left for Indy last Wednesday, I attended a seminar given by a famous scientist Dr. B from UCSF. I was truly attracted by not only his extraordinary contributions to the scientific field but, most importantly, his passion for science. I have not indulged in any passionate speech for a long time. Passion for science, isn’t it an invisible ruler to distinguish good scientists and mediocre ones?
So what are in the profile of a good scientist except clever brain and skillful hands?
Passion for science, definitely the fundamental one. Can you imagine that one enjoys hard working on weekends, patient bench troubleshooting, critical paper reading and continuous failures overcoming without passion? Isn’t passion the basic motivation to be ambitious and successful?
Passionate speaker, who are able to inspire other people’s enthusiasm.
Sense of humor, which bridges the distance between competitors and solve arguments.
Intriguing hobbies. Science is not the only thing in life. Both semi spheres of brain need to be effectively activated at certain time.

P.S. 1. For a female scientist, better to be sassy, sexy and savvy (ref. blhw72's blog) at the same time. No one will beat you.
2. If one has passion for writing, sharing, communicating and making friends, come to WXC.

Will she get herself in trouble by being sassy? I mean in work place. Maybe I'll vote for savvy, sexy, and smart in work place. Personally, I feel professional present is important, if you want others take you seriously.

I was very good at Math when I was in high school. However, I don't have the talent for language. Isn't it a good excuse for my poor English? hehe...

As a matter of fact, passion is a very broad topic. One may have passion for anything, for God, for music, for being a savvy woman and generally for life. Usually, our life is a routine, which sometimes is boring. How to keep passion for life and how to make our life much more colorful are what we pursue. Getting boring again. lol
Speaking of scientists, not all of them are excellent speakers. Sometimes the seminar is very boring because of the way the speaker presents. That is why I was so inspired by this guy. His inner passion drove his presentation.
I think as a scientist, one doesn't have to be handsome or sexy, but better charismatic. Maybe it applies for every occupation.
