譯者按：莎士比亞的許多作品寫於倫敦瘟疫時期，据學者的研究統計，瘟疫 「plague」一詞在莎士比亞作品中共出現九十八次，有瘟疫、災禍、折磨等多重意義，或用作比喻意義上的精神瘟疫。在其十四行詩中，先後出現四次，筆者早就有莎士比亞十四行詩全譯，此處先後刊載出現plague一詞的四首詩。

In faith I do not love thee with mine eyes, 
For they in thee a thousand errors note;
But 'tis my heart that loves what they despise,
Who, in despite of view, is pleased to dote.
Nor are mine ears with thy tongue's tune delighted;
Nor tender feeling, to base touches prone,
Nor taste, nor smell, desire to be invited
To any sensual feast with thee alone:
But my five wits nor my five senses can
Dissuade one foolish heart from serving thee,
Who leaves unswayed the likeness of a man,
Thy proud heart's slave and vassal wretch to be:
  Only my plague thus far I count my gain,
  That she that makes me sin awards me pain.

第一四一首

說真的，我愛你，不是憑眼睛，
因為掃視一眼便看到滿臉疵瑕；
可我睥睨的外貌卻令我動了心，
無視眼之所見，對你溺愛有加。
你談吐的聲音也不悅耳，
我一觸碰更不覺得柔和，
我的味覺嗅覺，都無意應邀入席
品嘗以你為主菜的姿色。
可是，無論我的五智五感 
都無法勸退我為你效勞的情癡，
鐵了的心讓我這貌似的男子漢
淪為奴僕侍候你的心，甘受你傲視。
我相思的時疫唯一的盈利，
是令我作孽的她以苦行給我獎勵。

第9行五智（five wits），即通識（common wit）、想像（imagination）、幻想（fantasy）、判斷（estimation）和記憶（memory）。五智或稱為五種內智，相應的外智是五感（視覺、聽覺、味覺、嗅覺和觸覺）的明智或敏銳。
結尾的對句包含一個悖論：苦行或痛苦既是懲罰也是獎勵，因為依照基督教義，苦行是贖罪的修行。
