胡爱萍打开手机看到这几行字，心中的怒气一下子堵到了嗓子眼儿，狠！算你狠！她侧过头，看了一眼车窗外，努力地止住就要涌出眼眶的半滴眼泪。好一个前世和来世！你已经把我当成了你的前世，还指望我把你当成来世的期盼，做梦去吧！你连我的前世都算不上，你只不过是我在寂寞途中偶然经过的一棵开花的树而已。
胡爱萍的脑海里闪过梦中那条蛇，她狠狠地自言自语道，你是蛇，是诱惑，是人间的罪恶！她一边想着，一边踩动了油门。一定要集中精力开车，千万不能因为一个不值得爱的人分神出事。
陈思诲一边上班，一边想着昨天晚上的事，心里有几分不安。他有点后悔不该那样对待爱萍，毕竟是他恋过的人。他想继续交往是不可能了，他不想再让心套上枷锁。那么也许应该找她深谈一次，也许应该道个歉。他决定下班后路过胡爱萍家亲自和她谈谈利害关系，相信她会理解和支持不继续交往的决定。他想手机和她约个时间，又怕她万一生气骂他。干脆亲自去一趟，反正路过。
胡爱萍早早地下班后直接去了一家卖花园材料的商店。因着春天的到来，院子里的杂草开始滋生。她需要买Bark Dust木屑，铺到自家院子周围。这种事本来应该男人干的，可是有什么办法呢？胡爱萍叹了口气。本想请公司来喷，可是院子又不大，不值得劳师动众。她找到Bark Dusk木屑后才发现是好大的一个袋子，自己搬都搬不动。正当胡爱萍转身将要离开时，迎面撞到Ken，她以前公司的同事。
Hi，how are you？Long time no see！Ken惊喜地和胡爱萍打着招呼。
Oh，it's you。I am here for bark dust, but it is too heavy! Are you still with the same company?
Yes, I am still there. But I am not with the same ....
Ken停顿了一下说，Let me help you！ Is this one Ok?
Actually, I could have asked the store staff for help. But the problem is when I get home, I still would not be able to move it out of my car.
Ken微笑了一下说，Do you mind if I help you ? I mean I don't mind passing by your house.
胡爱萍说声OK。她看到Ken轻轻地同时搬起两袋跟着她走到车旁边。You will follow me, will you? Just in case you get lost, this is my address. 胡爱萍草草地写下她的地址递给了Ken。
胡爱萍开车停进了车库。Ken的车停在了车库前。
Ken看了一眼时间说，It is only 4:30 now. It is too early for me to go to dinner. Maybe I can even help you spread the bark dust. It would not be long, I bet, half an hour to one hour would do.
也许平常胡爱萍不会答应这样的帮忙，她宁愿自己做事，也不愿亏欠别人太多。早晨收到陈思诲前世来世的短信后，她的心还在隐隐作痛。现在有人陪伴也好，何况Ken看上去如此decent。

夕阳西下，金灿灿的阳光洒在Ken的身上。胡爱萍想起阳光男孩这个词。她平时不喜欢白人男子，觉得他们就像上帝烤制陶瓷时缺了火侯一样，皮肤太白。今天她看到他金灿灿的头发，白里透红的肤色，健美的胸肌和大膀，深邃的眼睛，长长的睫毛，她突然觉得上帝把美貌赐给白人，把智慧赐给中国人，也许说得没错。Ken看上去和自己年纪差不多，也许小几岁也不一定。胡爱萍看了一眼他的手，咦，怎么没戴戒指？不会是刚刚干活时临时摘下来了？应该不会。她见过美国人干活也戴着戒指。
Bark dust （木屑）不一会儿就被Ken均匀地铺在院子里。深棕色的木屑把草坪都映衬得格外翠绿。All done！Ken灿烂地微笑着。胡爱萍此时的心情明朗起来。她说，
You just did a big favor to me. By our culture, I should invite you to have dinner with me.

说着，Ken跟着胡爱萍走进了屋里。
此时，陈思诲的车正开在一个block远处，他看到车库门口停了一辆车。不是胡爱萍的。胡爱萍的车他认识。他减慢了车速，缓缓地停在路边。
