筛选陪审团之二-------加州陪审团经历3

当天带的迷你派只有英文输入，因此不得不用英文记录。

Ok, have to go with Mini which has no Chinese input today.

Today is October 27, 2014. The jury duty continue on the third day. Total mission for today is to select 12 qualified jury in this case.

From last time, Mr. No.13, with a little pony tail,said that he has been to trials and been a jury for a murder case. But that case was not getting a verdict. Because he feel like the punishment was too much, even though the criminal just a helper in that case. So because he could see the result of agree the person commit a crime, he could not make decision to agree that criminal is a criminal.  

So let's call this one Mr. Soft Heart.

 

Not to my surprise, the people's lawyer excused this Mr. SoftHeart. 

Two other Chinese American were excused. One Indian American was excused. One gun store owner who from the beginning said he will not be impartial because he believed and trained policemen in using guns. He would strongly believe police is more truthful than other people.

I have to say the same thing. Here in California police is required to live up to more higher professional standards than other field. Media, lawyer and all kinds of organizations are tent to hold them accountable and beat them for using guns on duty.

Compare to China, police are machine of the power. Police in California is more like a helper and image of the justice. Sometimes being regulated too much, they have to defend themselves of using guns on duty.

I did interview some sheriffs in LA. They have to write reports after using their bullets, when and where they use their gun. Even patrolling a dangerous area, they are not feel free to fire gun when facing challenge incidents. Some policeman has to eat a lot of chocolates to come down. One pound a day. That is probably why some of them are really fat. It is not easy to be a police and some of them die on duty.

After the second round of excuses, Asian Americans getting less and less. 

Next 6 more people are chosen from the crowd of 100 +. Two blacks or African American are in the queue. One more round of questioning is on the way.

No.13 is from Pleasanton, his younger brother is police chief in Pleasanton. No. 14 is a black guy being a correction officer in county jail. He just graduated from criminal justice major 10 month ago. He said he will have problem believe confession. Because he saw people do false confessions all the time.

No. 15 is gang family guy. He strongly believe that drug plus death should charge for the highest punishment. Because his brother -in-law is a gang member and a drug user. His family was broken into by his brother-in-law and his gang member, and he saw his brother in law lying on the court and the lawyer helped him showing false evidence.

This guy will be "killed" by defendant lawyer soon, according to my guess.

No. 16 is a white girl got a new job. Today should be her first day of work.

No. 18 has family member in police and own a shot gun at home. A lady with gun.

回复 'txchild' 的评论 : English is totally a different language from Chinese. Most of us do not have confident to use it like we do for Chinese. Let's encourage each other even though we make mistakes all the time.

the hardest things to get used to are the language and culture. it's more annoying than helpful for most Chinese.
