Healthy, a way of living

One of my colleagues sent me a quote, Healthy, is not a goal, it is a way of living. I have been telling my patients about this all the time, and this quote just speaks it out.

I have some severely obese patients came to ask me to refer them to bariatric surgery in order to lose weight. They have struggled with their weight for long time, tried everything but still can not lose weight, now they want to have surgery to force themselves to eat less in order to lose weight.

Patients told me their goal is to get healthy and lose weight. I told the patients, healthy, is not a goal, it is a way of living. Surgery is just a tool, have a healthy life style is the most important thing to maintain weight even after surgery. If they do not change their way of eating and living, they will regain all the weight back even after surgery, which is very true, I had some patients gained all their weight back after 2 years post surgery.

It is very difficult, we are surrounded by food, we use food to socialize. I have never paid attention to calories until very recently, since I started to council patient on healthy eating, portion control, calories, food logs and full plate diet. One day I went to in-and-out for a burger, while waiting and eating my food, I noticed so many really big people around me. The food fairly inexpensive, quick and quite tasty, be honest, I love their burger. But I might only eat it once or twice a month, what about the people who eat this regularly? Then it is a problem.

I grew up eating at home almost all the time. I used to complain to my parents that they do not take us out to eat. But now I look back, I really appreciate the way my parents raised us. My mom's home cooking is very healthy, lots of plant based food and protein. And very important, we know what we put into our body. Nowadays, although I tried to cook different kind of food, but my basics and cooking habits still come from my parents.

I remember when I first came to US, I start to increase my meat intake, once upon a time, I can finish a whole steak by myself. I should have known better, especially as a trained medical professional, but I guess I just took it for granted when I was young. I start to cut down my animal protein intake now, trying to increase plant based protein intake in my diet. It is really easy to do as a Chinese, especially the training from my parents in my early years.

Ironically, as a physician, we have never been officially trained on the nutrition and behavior change. I start to increase my knowledge only very recently after I saw some of my patients struggling. I start to make my own soymilk, cook more at home, go out to eat less frequently. I always advise patient to eat at home, because food in restaurant is high in salt and fat. I know this is a difficult one, because the food in the restaurant taste so good.

You are what you eat, it is absolutely true. Be healthy, have it as a way of living.
