Two intertwining and related love stories... In the first story (set in 1867 England), a strange young woman is dishonored by her affair with a French officer, and loved by a proper young Victorian gentleman who falls hopelessly in love with her. The second story (set in the present) chronicles the similar relationships of the actors who are portraying the protagonists of the first story in a film. In both stories, the lovers are affectingly played by Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. John Fowles' novel was adapted for the screen by Harold Pinter and directed by Karel Reisz. Cinematographer Freddie Francis has been praised for his painterly re-creation of 19th-century Dorset, as well as his complementary 20th-century mise-en-scene.

Yes, the themes of "The French Lieutenant's Woman" are tied in with the characters and their development throughout the film. The two main characters, Sarah and Charles, represent different aspects of the themes of love and desire. Sarah, the mysterious woman at the center of the first story, is a complex character who challenges societal expectations and traditional gender roles. She is a symbol of freedom and self-discovery, as she refuses to conform to the rigid standards of her time and instead chooses to pursue her own desires and passions.

Charles, on the other hand, represents the Victorian gentleman who is torn between his duty and his love for Sarah. He struggles to reconcile his desire for her with the expectations placed upon him by society, and ultimately must choose between conforming to societal norms or following his heart.

The present-day characters, Anna and Mike, are actors portraying Sarah and Charles in a film adaptation of the first story. Their relationships mirror those of their characters, as they too must navigate the complexities of love and desire in the face of societal expectations and their own personal struggles.

The themes of truth and the relationship between past and present are also tied to the characters, as their personal histories and experiences shape their perceptions of truth and influence their decisions and actions. Overall, the themes of "The French Lieutenant's Woman" are closely tied to the characters and their development throughout the film.
