The Wind and the Lion/America grizzly bear/Candice Bergen/Sean C

(2023-04-15 16:35:43) 下一个

it's the wind that passes, but the sea remaids. it's God's will to these events, I'm just instrument.

Q? What was the quote,  in movie "The Wind and the Lion," 1975, of President Theodore Roosevelt. on bear and the spirit of America grizzly bear, fear nothing, courageous, indomitible,  uncounqured, a bear lives life loneliness, and other countries afraid and respect but never love America

A:

5 Massive Bears Larger Than a Grizzly - AZ Animals

accurate to the specific quote from the movie "The Wind and the Lion" (1975) by President Theodore Roosevelt.

The actual quote from the movie is: "The American grizzly is a symbol of the American character: strength, intelligence, ferocity. Maybe a little blind and reckless at times, but courageous beyond all doubt. And one other trait that goes with all previous. Loneliness. The American grizzly lives out his life alone. Indomitable, unconquered - but always alone. He has no real allies, only enemies, but none of them as great as he. You'll find only four animals in the mountains that will even attempt to take him on: a gray wolf, a pack of coyotes, which is no mean adversary, a cougar, which is a pretty tough customer, and the lynx - the lords of the wilderness. And how do you like that little fellow, now that you've met him? Now, if he were a human, you could tax him, enlist him, or draft him, and he'd still be unconquerable. But since he is a grizzly, we must respect him. Oh, yes, we'd all like to have the secret of his invincibility. And some of us think we have."

TJKCB 回复 悄悄话 “don’t hit a man if you can possibly avoid it, but if you do hit a man put him to sleep” Teddy Roosevelt (1858-1919) was a real man, conservationist, progressive president, soldier and a man of principle and integrity. "He like an older big brother you look up to. I admire his no nonsense and tell it like it is personality"--He did a lot for America in the short time he was in office. He Defined what it would be to be considered a true “American” patriot-Roosevelt was always trying to be something....instead of just being it--this personality type "Try Hard" Harvard man of innocent and childhood curiosity rooted in his boyhood reading. He was great because he was the first Progressive president.
His cousin, FDR, took his beginning and gave us our current Progressive government.
Social Security, the 40 hour work week, the minimum wage, unemployment insurance,
and the NLRB were all started under FDR (1882-1945).

"Mrs. Pedecaris, you are much trouble." My wife is much like Mrs. Pedecaris. She provokes me to think of things I typically would not do so. It troubles me to do so...and I love her dearly. I can certainly see how the character of the Raisuli (Sean Connery) is "taken by her."

Theodore Roosevelt’s bear is now in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

Alice Roosevelt was as strong willed and outspoken as actress Deborah Baxter portrayed her. She was an accomplished boxer and held a brown belt in Judo. She was probably as good a shot as her father. Once during his presidency one of Theodore Roosevelt’s staff walked into the Oval Office outraged over something Alice had said which caused an uproar in the press. The president threw his pen on the desk and said - quite forcefully - “Look! I can run the country or I can control Alice, no man can possibly do both! Which would you have me do?” The staff member walked out of the Oval Office without another word…
TJKCB 回复 悄悄话 Sean Connery certainly made his mark on the cinema business but even more so to us women who appreciate man in the almost perfect form. Engarbed or not thank you SC for those visions. RIP.

a fun movie - Milius knew how to capture the exoticism of the north african setting (altho it was shot entirely in Spain) - and was especially good at action - - there were a fine group of actors who captured the spirit of the film - my favorite was Brian Keith's colorful Teddy Roosevelt (my favorite performance of his) - and Connery's nuanced performance is my favorite of his

the real kidnap victims were a man (Ion Perdicaris) and his stepson (who was english) - and americans did not fight in any battles - the kidnapped men were released when the Shah paid the ransom - with Perdicaris maybe suffering from Stockholm Syndrome

the film's desperate stand by the americans to rescue the Raisuli - seems to derive from the Wild Bunch - released a few years earlier

i particularly enjoyed the march to the palace and the brief skirmish - i was impressed by the extras' military bearing - turned out they had some american marines - and for the rest - spanish soldiers - - "you are a dangerous man captain - and your president roosevelt is mad" - "yes sir"

The Great Raisuli is one of my favorite Connery roles; he embodies a brigand with a mind and heart. This was the same type of appeal Rudolph Valentino had as the great sheik of silent films. Connery was at his athletic best in this role, being able to jump on a horse as it flounders, rises and steps out. You can just feel that horse rising as Raisuli rises. Candice Bergen and the kids did a lot of riding too. I love the boy William, who falls into the romance of the Rif and the Raisuli, a wild thing that will eventually be stamped out by fate....
TJKCB 回复 悄悄话 Yes, that is a quote from the character Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli, played by Sean Connery, in the movie "The Wind and the Lion" (1975). The exact quote is:

"Is there not one thing in your life that is worth losing everything for?"

This quote is often interpreted as a challenge to President Theodore Roosevelt, played by Brian Keith, to reconsider his priorities and values. The quote also reflects Raisuli's own willingness to risk everything for his cause, which is to free his people from the oppression of the Moroccan government.
