【非文青N周一文】My Left Foot---学写Movie Review

My Left Foot is based on the true story of Christy Brown (played by Oscar best actor: Daniel Day-Lewis), an Irish painter and writer who suffered from cerebral palsy and could only control his left foot. The movie covers Christy's life from the very beginning of his life, through adolescence, to his marriage.  Christy Brown was born to a 1930s Dublin working class family, with many siblings. His disability left him not able to walk and talk early on in his life, but it didn’t deprive him of his talent and fun-loving nature. He learned math and spelling on his own by observing his siblings and even participated in their soccer games. Under the help of a speech therapist, he started talking and dabbled in painting, eventually settled as a writer and finished his autobiography: My Left Foot.

It is not easy to be disabled, nor is it for an able-bodied person to act as a disabled one, esp. one with only the control of the left foot. I read somewhere that a lot of the scenes of Daniel Day-Lewis were shot on his right foot via a mirror because he couldn’t do many of the things with his left foot. The acting really paid off. At watching the scene where Christy is blowing off the candles on his 18th birthday, I found myself blowing air to the screen myself.  That is how much empathized I was with the character.

Christy’s mom, (Best Oscar Supporting actress, Brenda Fricker ), is loving but stubborn at times, caring and yet stoic. The actress is from Dublin, so the accent and style are very much spot-on. The relationship between Christy and his mom is very well developed. My only complaint is that the mom doesn’t seem to have aged as much as she should in the movie. But whoever did the casting of the actors, he/she did a great job casting Hugh O'Conor for the early scenes, who resembles Daniel Day-Lewis so much that the switch from Hugh to teenager Daniel is seamless.

In general, the movie is an uplifting and inspiring one. No one would dislike a success story of a real underdog who can’t do almost anything except control his left foot. He already gets the audience’ sympathy from very early on in the movie.  In addition, he is so talented, both in painting and writing. You can’t help but cheer for him in his pursuit of happiness. If someone with only a left foot can do so much, a fully functional person like me should consider it a cakewalk to write a review of this film. However, I do find it difficult to use my somehow crippled second language to write something that can match such a wonderful movie.

As Christy can’t control his hands, I guess it would be a bit inconsiderate to use “two thumbs up” to sum up the review. So here is my evaluation: my left foot up. Mind you: I am lifting my left foot up, literally, too.

The review is loosely based on the following format:

Paragraph 1

You will need to include the following: name of the film, prominent stars of the film, basic setting ( time and place), and type of film ( comedy, adventure, drama, etc.)

Paragraph 2

You will need to write a plot summary for the movie. Do not reveal the ending. Discuss at least 5 events and be sure to cover the entire scope of the movie, except the very end.

Paragraph 3

Discuss one aspect of filmmaking. You may choose from acting, direction, editing, costume design, set design, photography, background music, or anything else you may think of. Be sure that you are specific and cite examples from the movie.

Paragraph 4

Discuss another aspect of filmmaking. You may choose from acting, direction, editing, costume design, set design, photography, background music, or anything else you may think of, but obviously choose something different from what you discussed in the previous paragraph. Be sure that you are specific and cite examples from the movie.

Paragraph 5
Give your overall reaction to the film as well as your opinion on the quality of the film. also include your recommendations for potential viewers.
