上世纪五十年代初。
荒漠中的小路上，一匹烈马驮着一位穿着志愿军服装的汉子，在飞奔。他就是刚从朝鲜战场回来的铁立春。他得知自己青梅竹马的心上姑娘孟桃花今天要出嫁，心急 如焚地打马飞奔，直往孟家居住的马营沟而去。
在风沙口，铁立春与娶亲的贫协主席赵山虎的儿子赵双成发生了激烈冲突。孟桃花毅然选择了跟着铁立春走。就在铁立春正要带着孟桃花离开时，朔北地区成年肆虐 的风沙暴突然降临，风沙弥漫中，孟桃花不幸跌入沟壑底下，被风沙掩埋而亡。为了保护桃花的坟墓不受风沙侵害，铁立春开始在风沙口种树。后来，他发现同村的 寡妇李樱桃和桃花的妹妹同时爱上了他，在一次醉酒的路上，被李樱桃扶进了她家，二人就成了一家人。自此以后，他们就开始了持续了几十年的曲折的种树之路。
