Crowded buildings, a stunning bay view, soaring skyscrapers, and enough history to fill up volume of textbook. This is New York, one of the most famous cities on the east coast.

New York was originally a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam, named after the Amsterdam in the Netherlands. However, the British took over the colony, and renamed it, splitting it into two parts: New Jersey and New York.

As a city in one of the 13 colonies, New York was the original capital of them all. There George Washington swore oath as the first president of the United States of America, and you can still visit that spot today.

Today, New York has an even bigger attraction: Wall Street, where the New York Stock Exchange is located. Fortunes are gained and lost there, where billions of stock is traded daily. The New York Stock Exchange provides a common platform for people to buy or sell their stock.

New York plays host to two monumental landmarks that have made their way into children’s fiction across the United States: the Metropolitan Museum and the Empire State Building. There is no better place to take a bookworm.

The Metropolitan Museum is a major setting in the book From the Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Two very different children, who are complete opposites yet somehow part of the same family, decide to run away. Claudia, always fussy, decides that they are not just running away from someplace, but also to someplace. James, who is adventurous about everything except money, joins along too. That someplace is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Parts of the museum, such as the Arms and Armor Wing, can be recognized from the book. And, of course, you can visit the Italian Renaissance where the Angel statue was once held.

Even if you haven’t read the book, the Metropolitan Museum is a fantastic place to visit. You can see paintings by the classical masters Vincent Van Go and Claude Monet. Art of all forms decorates the walls. There even is an Egyptian Temple in the Metropolitan Museum!

“Empire State Building, 600th floor, Mount Olympus please.” According to The Lightning Thief, Mount Olympus is the pinnacle of civilization. Greek gods and goddesses gather there at the solstices to talk about the happenings of the world. Although the 600th floor isn’t available to mere mortals, you can still go to the observation deck on the 86th floor. You can see all sides of New York, without any high walls blocking you. From here, you can see the Hudson Bay, the Freedom Tower, and the Chrysler Building, all the way to the streets below. There also is a virtual tour of New York, where you ride a simulated helicopter. No matter what you do, the Empire State Building is a must-see!

Clearly, New York is the perfect vacation spot to go to. When looking for someplace to visit, whether it’s for a week or a month, New York is the best spot to visit!
