1981年，多明哥找来好友约翰 · 丹佛一同合作专辑《也许就是爱》（Perhaps Love），演唱多首电影、音乐剧的主题曲，其中也包括了约翰丹佛的畅销曲《安妮之歌》（Annie’s Song）。不过，多明哥不甘于只唱些经典歌曲，慧眼挑中了丹佛尚未发表的歌《也许就是爱》。
丹佛早在七十年代便已《乡村路带我回家》（Take Me Home, Country Roads）名满天下，但他进入八十年代，声势却已江河日下。他写这首曲子时，与发妻安妮正面临婚姻低潮，令他处在生命中的低潮。在他开车前往美国加州的途中，他沿着海岸线，在蓝天白云下突然灵感来临，便产生了这首描写爱的真谛的歌，也成为他音乐生涯后期中最脍炙人口的代表作。
这首歌从一开始丹佛的吉他弹弦开始，多明哥低沉浑厚的嗓音唱出「 爱就像避难所给你温暖，在你最孤单的时刻，带你回家。」接着丹佛清亮的高音唱出「 爱就像一扇窗户，帮助你敞开自我；就算迷失了自己，但爱会带领你前进。」两人的合声搭配的天衣无缝。
这首歌当年一推出后，虽只拿下美国告示牌单曲榜第五十九名，却无损于歌迷对此曲的喜爱，并在口碑推波助澜下，至今销售早已突破百万张。
