China: New security measures cause delays in air travel

17-Mar-2008 10:37:22 AM (GMT)

BEIJING, March 17, 2008 (AFP) - Security at China\'s airports has been ramped up ahead of the Beijing Olympics amid fears of terrorist attacks and social unrest, causing delays for passengers, officials and travellers said Monday.

China\'s aviation administration announced last week it would ban passengers from carrying liquids aboard flights and began implementing the restrictions over the weekend, causing some people to miss their planes, travellers said.

The ban comes after Chinese authorities said an alleged Muslim terrorist tried to blow up a plane with soft drink cans containing petrol on a flight from China\'s restive Xinjiang region to Beijing this month.

The tighter regulations coincided with the outbreak of deadly anti-China riots in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.

In Lhasa they were checking for liquids and this really caused a lot of confusion at the airport, a tourist who evacuated the city following the riots told AFP when arriving at Chengdu city in southwestern China\'s Sichuan province.

A lot of people missed their planes or almost missed their planes.

Delays and missed flights were also reported by passengers at airports in Beijing and Shanghai as security personnel stepped up checks on hand luggage.

Li Jiaxiang, director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said last week the new security measures were in preparation for the August Beijing Olympics and that further precautions would be taken as the Games neared.

The new regulations, posted on the administration\'s website on Sunday, ban most liquids from being taken on board and restrict others such as baby food, cosmetics and medicine.

Passengers travelling with infants must notify airlines in advance so that the carrier can provide baby food for the children, the regulations said.

Up to 100 milliliters (three fluid ounces) of cosmetics would be allowed on board, but must be carried in separate clear plastic bags, it added.

Passengers must turn in liquid medications to flight attendants who will bring the medicine on board, it said.

Editor\'s Note

· Airline disruptions

Those planning to travel by air to or from this destination should check with their airline or travel agent immediately to reconfirm travel arrangements. If your flight has been canceled, request the next available flight. Traffic on roadways leading to airports may be considerably slower than normal. Airports are likely to become very crowded, and lines will be long. Allow a good measure of extra time to get to the airport, check in and go through security.
