Weclome to English @ the movies where we teach you American English heard at the movies. Today's phrase is from the movie "Youth". This one is a comedy of a funny movie about friendship and growing older.  Fred is a retired  musical composer. He is taking vocation at the foot of Alps mountain with his good friend and his daughter. Let's take a look and watch for the phrase " a waste of time".

---Daddy, you will not be bored because I have arranged the full service for you. You're going to have massage, suana, checkups with the doctor every single day to help you get back in shape.

---At my age getting in shape is merely waste of time.

So what does that mean "a waste of time"?

A). You have run out of time

B). It is not worth doing.

Listen again and see if you are correct.

...

"A waste of time" means it is not worth doing.  It means that there are better things to do with the time you have. In the movie, Fred said that getting into good physical shape at his old age is not worth doing.

This is a popular phrase. One example: People might say washing your car before it is going to rain is a waste of time. And that is English @ the Movies.
