Vintage Find

This vintage stove was found on eBay and retrieved from a house in the Hollywood Hills.

This banquette delineates the gally-style kitchen and provides seating for eight.

Weekend Transformation

Anyone with a free weekend can refashion their kitchen into a fun, fresh room, and this total renovation cost less than $800. Ceramic tiles, less than $2 per square foot, were placed on top of existing countertops, and are affixed to the old surface with grout. Plywood was used to extend the breakfast bar by one foot on the side and end. Bar chairs, purchased at an unfinished furniture store for $60 each, were stained light green.



Inexpensive wicker baskets, personalized with monograms, create an organization center.

Cottage Charm

This renovated kitchen remained the same size, but it's now more efficient. A new island with a curved countertop accomodates a bar area and improves circulation.



The breakfast room features a built-in display cabinet for crystal and glassware.



Topped with a granite countertop that features a limestone decorative edge, the island is also home to a hammered copper vegetable sink and wine cooler.

Coastal Kitchen

Kitchen cabinets and concrete countertops were made on site at this coastal home. A local artisan wove the produce baskets.

Zen Kitchen

Red is a color most often seen in dining rooms. But these kitchen cabinets sport nine coats of high-gloss red exterior paint, which mimics Asian lacquer treatments and echoes the house's Zen restraint. The bright hue also energizes the room and sets the stage for convivial gatherings.

Open Viewing

An open cupboard displays tin trays mixed with tableware, including inexpensive plates and bowls purchased from an Asian restaurant.

Elements of the Old World

Earth tones prevail in this open kitchen that looks as if it's been in place for centuries. Open shelving, naturally finished cabinets, and a pot rack over the center island provide abundant storage. Accessories personalize the space, and the tile backsplash over the stove makes the kitchen feel even more unique.






Overhead cabinetry provides stylish storage opportunities. Open shelves are a great way to show off collections. And remember to place accessories on top of your cabinets, making sure the accessories are big enough to see from below.

Retro Kitchen

A retro workspace features an old porcelain sink discovered in this home's basement, vintage advertising signs, a red and gold 18-inch squares of linoleum.

Coastal View

During the renovation of this home, these windows were added to bring in light and expose views.

Classic Comfort

The combination of the creamy taupe-glazed cabinets and the rich black granite countertops in this kitchen is dramatic. Still, it's the details that make this room unique. Usually reserved for a window, the tiled space behind the sink offers a way to easily change the look of the kitchen with different pieces of art.



A simple switch of artwork changes the look of the kitchen. The lantern above illuminates the art and work area.



Keep your cutting board at the ready. This one fits directly in a drawer and slides back to access utensils below. Drawer guides attached underneath the board hold it in place. This feature can easily be outfitted on custom or stock cabinetry--just make sure you clean it well before closing the drawer.

Room for All Ages

Pairing neutral-colored granite countertops with a tumbled travertine tile backsplash adds warmth to the white cabinets in this kitchen. The island contains extra-deep drawers for storage on one side and refrigerated drawers on the other. An additional sink is located at one end. Three barstools make it possible for the children to do homework, grab a snack, or just keep mom and dad company when they are preparing a meal.



The couple made great use of corner space by installing an appliance garage to keep the countertops free of clutter.



This homeowner used decorative tiles to fill the space above the oven. The antique terra-cotta botanical piece was a natural fit for the room. Still, it appeared a bit small in the large space above the stove. So, just as you would frame a painting, the homeowner used coordinating picture molding to surround the piece. She also incorporated mosaic tiles in a wide border to further enhance the look.



Space-saving refrigerated drawers hold drinks and after-school snacks. Set in the island, the drawers are easy for the youngsters to reach.
