Family Kitchen and Dining Nook

An inviting nook takes the place of an awkwardly located oven and cabinets in this Salt Lake City home. Built-in benches contain lift-up storage bins and provide a family of five with a cozy spot for meals, homework and other activities.



For a little fun, the owners installed a blackboard on the family room side of the nook. It’s low enough in the wall for even the youngest family member to use as his personal canvas and has become the entire family’s message center.

Savvy Space

Frameless cabinets with updated Shaker-style doors in two hues—enamel-glazed latté above, and toffee-stained cherry below—help to accomplish the look. Dishes and dry goods fill glass-front cabinets and acrylic-front drawers.

Practical Fashion

The kitchen's 12-inch-deep, stainless, commercial-grade sink easily handles unwieldy pots. The satin nickel faucet with side spray offers graceful style and restaurant efficiency.



In the bar area, open shelving takes the place of upper cabinets and displays glazed ceramic dishes and deep-blue stemware.

Gathering Space

Having ample room to maneuver, as well as storage and counter space, is every cook's wish for a dream kitchen. This one boasts 35 cabinets, 18 drawers, and nine open shelves-all in an efficient 175-square-foot space.

Raising the Bar

The bar is outfitted with an under-counter refrigerator and stainless steel sink with a gooseneck faucet.

The Cottage Kitchen

Heather Chadduck gave her new kitchen cottage style with beaded board cabinets, concrete countertops, and antique accesories.



Heather found this fixture at a flea market. When a lamp shop quoted $250 for a shade, she made her own -- with a piece of linen and cotton ties.



Heather found old street lamps, rewired them and hung them above new concrete countertops. The bar seats are old chemisty lab stools.

An antique hutch in the kitchen frees up cabinet space and keeps china within easy reach.

Reinventing the Past

While bright recessed bulbs illuminate the kitchen, a dramatic chandolier hangs over the dining table.

Striking Stainless

Kitchen appliances are visually striking with a stainless-steel finish that complements the tawny cabinetry.



Appliances hide in an oversized island with a deep stainless sink and shelved storage under an African Iroko hardwood countertop.



At the ends of a trestle dining table, two cushy wing chairs ensure the space will be used well past mealtime.



A soft gray color on the walls and ceiling mimics decades-old whitewashed limestone.

The diagonal two-tone floor tiles mirror the color of the poured concrete countertops, beaded-board walls and white trim.

Sleek and Unique Kitchen

The kitchen of this Idea House exudes a polished look while maintaining a sense of warmth. Pine floors add richness, while the cabinetry displays a smooth walnut finish. Granite countertops inject more luster. To make meal prep easier, the center island features a vegetable sink.



Tucked off the kitchen and family room, the sun-filled breakfast room looks out onto an outdoor fireplace. An arched opening lined with manufactured stone signals the entrance to this cozy spot. The built-in hutch, which displays colorful dishes, mirrors the finish on the kitchen cabinets. Two iron plate racks frame the hutch's niche.



Referencing the exterior, manufactured stone lines the opening above the range and beneath the bar. Tumbled marble tiles form the range's backsplash. This wall is also highlighted by smaller accent tiles and two metal tiles with a rooster motif.

Kitchen With Class

Distressed, furniture-style cabinetry in hues of cocoa and cream creates a casual atmosphere in this kitchen. The matte finish of the deep brown honed-granite countertops perpetuates the aged appearance. Cabinets suspended over the island showcase a collection of colorful dishes. Glass doors and sides allow light to pass through, accenting dishes and glassware.



In this breakfast room, plaid cushions on the banquette and complementary floral window treatments continue the nature-inspired palette of cream, blue, green, and gold found on the first floor of this home.



Combining storage and an open feel in a kitchen can seem like an impossible task. That's why we love the floating cabinet above this island. Its glass doors and sides allow light to pass through, accenting dishes and glassware. It hangs high enough that it doesn't block views. Lights underneath the unit illuminate the work surface below.

Creative Kitchen

A sheer ivory-colored finish was applied to the horizontal cypress paneling, giving a light and airy feel to this kitchen. The open storage is both a means of displaying cookware and an example of creative shelf design. The open shelving is great for showcasing serving pieces and pottery, and guests love them because they can easily find needed items.



The 1 1/2-inch-thick wooden shelves rest on metal supports and hang from pieces of 1-inch-diameter galvanized pipe.

Cook's Center

The gas range has an alcove of its own surrounded by cultured stone. Narrow, built-in shelves on either side of the range are perfect for storing spices.

This Kitchen Soars

In this kitchen, a high-pitched ceiling, transom windows, and light wood furnishings highlight the best attraction of all--nature. To top it all off, the design team used unique lighting to add warmth, including inset ceiling lights, low-hanging halogen lamps, and coves above the cabinets.

Highlands Kitchen

Harmonizing with its mountain-town setting, this kitchen features natural finishes and minimal fuss. The space delivers a feeling of age and hand-hewn character, despite its contemporary amenities. Fitting touches include an iron chandelier, wide-plank floors, and antiqued cabinetry.

Coastal Kitchen

This bright coastal kitchen features crisp detailing. Clean white cabinets and a marble-topped island contrast with ocean-blue backsplash tiles and matching barstool cushions. Woven bamboo shades lend subtle texture and offer flexible sunlight control.
