This room is wrapped from floor to ceiling in pine that is finished with a coat of linseed oil. The comfortable, overstuffed furniture tempts you to sit and stay awhile. A rich, aged leather sofa complements a large tufted wing chair. The cocktail table, which is designed to look like a piece of luggage, is the perfect spot to prop up your feet or to play a board game.


This homeowner wanted to include an antique cash register in the décor. It rests on a slab of marble.



The knotty pine walls add rustic flair to this gathering spot. The piano was left to the homeowner by her grandmother, and built-ins were designed so it fits snugly in a niche. The rolltop desk, paired with an antique lawyer's bookcase, is also a prized purchase that enables the couple to keep up with paperwork.

The designer said she imagined the family room as a place for owners who travel a lot and like the look of European family houses that are ancient, but desire a fresh way of living.



A large mantelpiece fits the scale of the room, and slipcovered chairs provide for casual dining in a sunny corner.
