MOST people know that if their house is burgled the chance of the offender being caught is fairly slim, but a new audit report has revealed just how slim.

The report released today shows only 6.4 per cent of break and enters in NSW are solved, a rate which ranks the state second last, ahead of only South Australia.

The NSW auditor-general\'s report, Dealing with Household Burglaries: NSW Police Force, released today, shows NSW ranks fifth out of six states.

Tasmania leads the way, with successful prosecutions in 16.9 per cent of cases, followed Western Australia at 14.8 per cent, Victoria at 9.7 per cent, Queensland 8.3, NSW 6.4 and South Australia at 6.2 per cent.

The report says 60 per cent of all household burglaries occur in Sydney, but residents of Bourke, Moree Plains, Wentworth, Narrandera and Armidale are at greatest risk of being burgled.

The good news for NSW residents is that the number of household burglaries has fallen by more than 30 per cent in the past five years.

Auditor-general Peter Achterstraat said recorded rates of burglary were lower than 10 years ago.

This downward trend is pleasing for all of us, although we should not become complacent, Mr Achterstraat said.
