One commend:

Politicians are taking advantage of the bad image of China, with two purposes: 1. to show how moral they are by condemning the bad guys and hopefully to win some votes; 2. throw the ball to the Chinese so they do not need to be responsible for the economic recession.

US don\'t want to be Olympic \'cop-outs\'
It would be a cop-out for countries to skip the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics as a way of protesting against China\'s crackdown in Tibet, President George W Bush\'s national security adviser says.
The kind of quiet diplomacy that the US is practising is a better way to send a message to China\'s leaders rather than frontal confrontation, Stephen Hadley said in a television interview Sunday.

Bush has given no indication he will skip the event. I don\'t view the Olympics as a political event, Bush said this past week. I view it as a sporting event. The White House has not yet said whether he will attend the opening ceremony on Aug. 8.

Ueberroth promises clean Olympic team

Ueberroth says the move toward a more open society that many believed would spring forth when the International Olympic Committee awarded the Olympics to China is happening. That hasn\'t been highlighted of late, though, because of nonstop news about pollution, Tibet, Darfur, human rights protests and disruptions along the torch relay route.

Having gone there every year for last seven years, the country\'s changed, and it\'s opening up every single minute, Ueberroth said. Anyone who argues that is semi-blind. It is changing. Some could argue whether it\'s changing fast enough.

Ueberroth said he felt no need, during a visit to Beijing last week, to reiterate America\'s intention to participate in the Olympics despite growing calls for a boycott.
