Brian McKnight出生于1969年6月5日，美国纽约市。他成长于一个音乐世家，全家都是当地教堂唱诗班的成员。他的祖父是指挥。在这种宗教信仰的熏陶下，McKnight还从中了解到了其他音乐知识。 在他很小的时候就开始尝试着写一些简单的曲子（软爵士，简单好听的那种）。很快，他组织了自己的乐队并且在本地开始演出。18岁的时候，McKnight获得了出唱片的机会。他加入了有他哥哥Claude在内的Take 6乐团，并和一家唱片公司签定了合同。

在推出了相当数量的DEMO之后，McKnight吸引了Mercury Records 总裁Ed Eckstine 的目光。Eckstine很欣赏McKnight的嗓音，并且在两个礼拜之内月他签定了合同。McKnight第一次在公司旗下推出了The Way Love Goes"，在公告牌节奏布鲁斯排行榜上停留了19个礼拜并达到了第十一名的成绩。不过他后来的两支单曲都未能突破公告牌节奏布鲁斯排行榜60名以内。其中一首名为"Love Is"的歌，是与黑人女歌星Vanessa Williams 合作的，不过讽刺的是，这首歌曲虽然在节奏布鲁斯榜上无名，但在流行榜上却爬到了第三的位置。但不管怎么样，还是为McKnight争取到了一些歌迷。

他的第二张专辑《I Remember You》卖了5万张左右，其中有5首单曲都进了公告牌节奏布鲁斯榜前20。这时McKnight的名声已经确立了，这时，公司决定停止一切工作把精力都放在他的第三张专辑《Anytime》上面。首个单曲"You Should Be Mine (Don't Waste Your Time)"推出，在全美音乐排行榜上到了17名位置，这首歌是由说唱歌手MA与他合作的，试图将HIP HOP歌迷尽可能的拉到McKnight的拥护者中。不管怎样，这首歌曲已经代表了这张专辑会是十分成熟的节奏布鲁斯以及浪漫情歌的组合。专辑登上了全美销售榜的20名以内。然后McKnight转投到著名黑人音乐唱片Motown Records，并推出了圣诞专辑《 Bethlehem》。 随后在1999年推出了大受欢迎的《Back at One》，这张专辑只用了几周时间就爬上了全美销售榜第二的位置。

2001年，Brian McKnight推出了他的第五张专辑，《Superhero》 。这张专辑依旧延续了McKnight一贯擅长的浪漫中板节奏布鲁斯情歌风格。不过里面有些歌曲也体现出他敢于创新改变的另一面。标题曲Superhero就是一首稳健硬朗的摇滚歌曲，全部配器都由电吉他和人力打击乐器组成。一向温和的McKnight也玩了玩几乎从未尝试过的风格。在歌曲中还有他一段尖啸，效果不错。在额外歌曲"Groovin' Tonight," 中，他和Nate Dogg 合作了一个活泼的R&B即兴，这个组合倒是挺有趣。回到他擅长的曲路上来，"My Kind of Girl," 是他与'N Sync'里的Justin Timberlake合作的。这是首温和甜美的歌曲，清亮的原声吉他伴奏其中。这两个歌手的精彩表现给歌曲添加了更高的感染力。不过这张专辑也并不是那么完美，歌曲的连贯性不是很好。而且 McKnight温和的性格和比较传统的节奏布鲁斯表演方式虽然有着一些忠实听众，但变化过少难免有点单调，这大概也是他始终不能大红大紫的原因。这张专辑也许不能评价为超级经典，不过还是足够杰出。杰出到今年第四十四届格莱美给了McKnight总共5项提名，而到底能拿到几个奖，不到评比出来那天，谁也不知道。
