我和我的先生来美前素不相识。 我们在同一年来到美国一个北方城市的大学里攻读同一学科的博士。我俩都拿着全奖，读书很用功，日子却过得很简朴。我们开着一辆1000美元买来的旧车，和另一对夫妇合住在一套离校5英里的公寓里。

学校里的功课重，每日在学校做作业或项目要到凌晨一两点才往回开。深夜的大街上清冷无人。田野里升起的雾气弥漫到公路上来。路灯和稀稀落落的几间商店的霓虹灯招牌罩在光晕里，像虚幻的舞台一样。冷风把我们的困乏暂时吹走了。在这样的时刻开车走在路上，有几许害怕，几许清醒。前不见古人，后不见来者，让在异国他乡的我们有些迷茫恍惚。

就在这样的一个夜晚的归途中，电台里徐徐流出这首歌，触动我的灵魂深处，成为我的最爱。日后每次听到此歌，往事历历在目；仿佛回回头见到自己一路走来的痕迹，又想要转过头来看清楚未来。
