该剧成功地塑造了毛泽东、周恩来、朱德、刘少奇、张闻天、任弼时等党中央第一代领导集体的光辉形象，以宏大的历史场景和细腻的人物刻画，生动地再现了以毛泽东为核心的中共中央领导中国人民坚持抗日战争的过程，再现了抗日民族统一战线从形成到确立的过程，再现了中国共产党发展壮大、日益成熟的过程，再现了毛泽东思想由形成到成熟进而确立为全党指导思想的过程，以饱满的热情讴歌了延安精神。

[延安颂]突出了抗日救亡这一主题。展现了中国共产党在抗战中的中流砥柱的作用，着重反映了我党领导下的武装力量进行的平型关战役、火烧阳明堡机场、广阳战斗和冀中平原游击战、百团大战、江南敌后的抗日游击战争等。同时，对国民党军的正面战场，如上海保卫战、台儿庄战役等，也作了反映。

该剧中的许多故事情节处理得细致得体，如许世友对毛泽东态度的转变；毛泽东果断处理黄克功事件；毛泽东对诅咒他的伍家婆姨不但不追究，反而认真调查原委，进而调整了税收政策，减轻民负等，都为该剧增色不少。剧中的主要演员唐国强饰演毛泽东，刘劲饰演周恩来，蒋介石由马晓伟饰演。
