Gilles Binchois - Deuil angoisseux Why is great : Inspired melodist whose secular songs were the toast of Europe. What's his story : Binchois was one of the great melodists of the early Renaissance. He broke free of prevailing orthodoxy to create a new kind of spontaneous expression, often following his heart rather than stifling rules. In contrast to the increasing complexity of ‘Ars nova’(14th-century polyphonic） writing, Binchis advocated a return to naturalness and simplicity.
