Another 42,000 Men in August to Fall Back: russian Recruitment No Longer Replaces What the Front Consumes

For the second month in a row, russian losses have topped 40,000. ISW warns that the volunteer-based system is now struggling to replace them. And while putin and Fedorov keep describing a Ukrainian front on the verge of collapse, even russian maps show how little is left of some of the advances.
Zaporizhzhia There is a number that tells the story of russias summer in Ukraine better than most frontline bulletins: 124,170. That is how many men moscow has lost in three months, with July and August steadily above the 40,000 mark. To be precise, counting the dead and the badly wounded, in June the Ukrainian General Staff and British intelligence had recorded 39,290 casualties in the russian ranks. In July there were 42,860, and in August 42,020. What makes the picture far more interesting, however, is the independent assessment the Institute for the Study of Wardrawsfrom those figures, comparing that data already catastrophic in itself with what it has actually produced on the ground.
A balance that has now been negative for months on end, and that saw the russians fall back once again in the month just ended.
In August, specifically, ISW was able to confirm just90.35 square kilometers seized by russian forcesacross all of Ukraine. Even including the areas into which moscow managed to infiltrate men without necessarily consolidating control, the haul comes to 123.53 square kilometers. In the same month, however, ISW observed at least129.81 square kilometers liberated by Ukrainian forces, noting moreover that the latter figure is probably conservative because, as we too haveexplainedfrom the field,Kyiv normally makes its results public only once they have long been consolidated realities, while moscow does the opposite.

The ratio of men consumed to territory taken becomes staggering:465 russian casualties for every square kilometer effectively seized, or 340 if infiltrations are included. The comparison with a year ago is even more telling. In August 2025 russian forces had seized about 505.55 square kilometers; in August 2026, barely 90.35.
What we are watching, then, is not an army converting enormous losses into an equally enormous advance but a military machine in deep trouble that keeps consuming tens of thousands of men to obtain mostly negative movements of the line, measurable in many sectors in kilometers or even hundreds of meters.
The American institute now converges with the assessment wemadea week ago, confirming thatrussias main force-generation mechanism, based on volunteer recruitment, is now struggling to produce enough men to replace current losses. ISW goes so far as to ask how long moscow can sustain its current offensive tempo and its current loss rate without resorting to some form of mobilization.
For the russian regime, it is becoming ever harder to turn the available population into soldiers at the same speed with which the front consumes them.
It is exactly what we have observed from the field in recent months through a series of apparently separate signals: ever-higher bonuses for those who sign a contract, money offered even to middlemen able to find new recruits, convicts, foreigners, vulnerable categories, growing administrative pressure and various forms of coercive recruitment. We have evendocumentedthe creation of a new formation thatabsorbsformer Ukrainian servicemen and prisoners of war recruited during or after captivity.

The data available today makes eloquently clear that an evident manpower problem exists on the russian side.
We were the first tosayso, back when the vast majority of Western media framed the manpower problem as an urgency pressing above all on the Ukrainian side. Weexplainedthat this was not the case, and thatKyivs most evident problem was and remained ballistic missile defenses. Today the numbers prove us right, and they explain what will happen ifthe economic, political and coercive cost of producing the next russian soldier keeps rising while the previous one is lost ever faster.

What is happening in three specific sectors of the front deserves, then, to be looked at from this perspective.
A comparison circulating in recent days uses the maps of the pro-russian milblogger Rybar to overlay the situation in Zaporizhzhia onFebruary 24 with that of September 1, 2026, in the western sector of the oblast. It shows that in some areas the line attributed to russian forces has receded southward from the positions moscow was claiming at the start of the year, particularly around Stepnohirsk and along part of the axis west of Orikhiv.

This is nota russian retreat toward collapse, as some Western accounts explain, but a no less serious situation afflicting the occupying army:much of that ground had already been counted as seized when it was in fact gray zone with a high rate of russian infiltration. The Ukrainians have re-established control over that entire stretch, systematically eliminating the enemy cells. The situation is plain today in the Ukrainian counterattacks west of Orikhiv and in the failure of even the most kremlin-loyal milbloggers to confirm new russian advances. Already in previous months, for instance, Rybar hadacknowledgedthat Ukrainian forces had retaken most of Prymorske and reopened the fight for Stepnohirsk, progressively shifting the front.
In all its drama, moscows problem is very simple:men and months of fighting have been spent to seize ground that in some sectors must now be defended all over again by the same logic, while far more ground is contested or already lost.

What is happening in the Lyman and Dnipropetrovsk sectors we have alreadydescribedin our previousdispatches, and it follows the same logic. At Lyman, about 4,000 russians remain compressed in a pocket that is now closing, their last exit routes under Ukrainian fire, while in eastern Dnipropetrovsk Kyivs forces have liberated Kalynivske and Stepove, pushing the occupiers back to the administrative boundary of Donetsk Oblast. Not by chance, ISWidentifiesthe Lyman and Oleksandrivka directions as the main axes of Ukraines August counteroffensive, admitting that it is above all there that itscount of liberated territory remains an underestimate.
By any measure, then, the front consumes more men and ground than moscow manages to grab.

In 1.653 days of war, we recorded over 300 videos from ground zero and wrote more than 3,000 articles at least 1,600 in English, and over 1,400 in Italian.
Were doing our best to provide genuine, first-hand reports from zones where almost no press dares to go. This means living in a kill zone constantly. We take the risk, but without your invaluable support, our voices would remain unheard and silent. Without brave people sharing our articles from afar, they would remain unread. Our reports would go unseen, and our efforts would be lost. Theres still a lot of work to do here, as the people around us are also in no better situation.
Were renewing our fundraising campaign and thanking everyone who joins us in helping to restore what Russia is destroying. Moving forward, not even with a small reimbursement for each article we write, is extremely challenging. Thats why we are grateful to all the kind people who support us and trust in our mission.
Even a small donation helps.
Well keep you updated on developments.
Thank you all, dear friends ??

Giorgio Provinciali)
