London Goes First: Britain Keeps Breaking the Wests Taboos on Ukraine
By: Giorgio Provinciali
Live from Ukraine ??
In the month when most people are focused on summer vacations, we cant help but think about how murderous the upcoming winter will be. For this reason, we want to sincerely thank those who think of us and support us. If our voices continue to fly freely, it is mainly because of you.
Kyiv In russias war against Ukraine, London has almost always done the same thing: it decided first.
On August 24, 2026, Ukraines Independence Day, three capitals spoke three different political grammars. In Kyiv, the British prime ministerannouncedthat MBDA would be allowed to share with Ukraine classified information on the British components of SCALP the French version of Storm Shadow required for local assembly lines, and signed the agreement making the United Kingdom the first international partner of Avengers AI Labs, a platform containing five million annotated battlefield images, largely drawn from the DELTA system. At UN headquarters, meanwhile, Washingtondeclined to signthe appeal by fifty countries and the European Union calling on russia to halt its attacks. In moscow, a CIA representative and the Vaticans top diplomat were arriving.
The decision removes the technological constraint that had prevented a capability received from abroad from becoming an at least partly sovereign industrial capacity. Quantities are unknown and timelines disputed, but one fact is certain: Ukraine already has the production capacity to begin immediately. Paris and Kyiv are aiming for an assembly line by years end, while analysts expect the process to take years. kremlin spokesman Peskovsaidthat Britain is participating in this war andannouncedthat intelligence services would seek out the future production lines in order to destroy them.
Once again, London is the first to assume a responsibility that many partners consider necessary but that nobody else yet wants to make explicit.

The founding precedent that we remember most clearly in Ukraine dates to January 17, 2022. While many capitals read the russian buildup as negotiating pressure, Londonannouncedthe shipment ofNLAWanti-tank systems andinstructors, after Operation Orbitalhad trainedmore than 22,000 Ukrainian service members since 2015. The NLAWs did not decide the Battle of Kyiv on their own, but they made resistance against the mechanized columns feasible and demonstrated thatarming Ukraine before the attack did not produce the escalation invoked by the kremlin.
That summer, with russias full-scale invasion of Ukraine under way,Operation Interflexturnedbilateral training into an international force-generation pipeline through which more than 63,000 Ukrainian service membershad passedfortraining in the United Kingdomby this summer. We personally know many of them very many. TheInternational Fund for Ukrainebelongsto the same logic: eleven countries and more than 2 billion converted into joint orders for air defense and uncrewed systems.
In January 2023camethe fourteenChallenger 2s. We remember them very well because, though militarily limited in number, they carried enormous political weight: they stripped Western reluctance over modern tanks of its collective justification, and the debate over Leopard 2s and Abrams tanks became an organizational and industrial one. In March, London added the most taboo-breaking of its firsts, confirmingthat the Challengers would come withdepleted-uranium armor-piercing ammunition. putininvokeda nuclear component and promised a response. London recalled that depleted uranium had been a standard component of armor-piercing ammunition for decades and had nothing to do with nuclear capability. Six months later, Washington announced the same ammunition for the Abrams. We too wrote about it extensively from the field.
This has often been Britains function: to absorb the initial cost of a decision and reduce the political cost of imitation.
February 8, 2023, was the day of the famous helmet Zelensky delivered to the House of Commons bearing the words We have freedom. Give us wings to protect it. Londonexpandedtraining to fighter pilots and, together with the Netherlands, promotedthe F-16 coalition, later led in practical terms by Copenhagen and The Hague.
In May 2023cametheStorm Shadows, described in political language as long-range missiles. Technically, they are stand-off cruise missiles with a range of more than 250 kilometers; the imprecise label measured the taboo that allies believed they were breaking. They expanded the target set as far as occupied Crimea and, together with drones and Ukrainian strike systems, helped disperse part of the Black Sea Fleet away from Sevastopol. France followed with SCALP, then came ATACMS. An exceptional capability became ordinary; the August 2026 step transfers its industrial know-how.
In May 2024, then-Foreign Secretary David Cameronsaidthatit was for Ukraine to decide how to use British weapons, including the right to strike the bases of aggression inside russian territory. The reactionwas the summoningof the ambassador and a threat to strike British targets in Ukraine and beyond. The mechanism repeated itself exactly:russia proclaimed a red line, London crossed it in a controlled way, the promised strategic retaliation failed to materialize, and the allies room for decision widened.
On January 12, 2024,the United Kingdombecame the first G7 country to signa bilateral security agreement with Ukraine, expandedin January 2025 by the100 Year Partnership. Londonhas committedroughly 16 billion in military assistance, promising at least 3 billion a year through 203031, andthe policy has held through five prime ministers and a change of governing party: the donors answer to the same electoral cycles from whichUkraines defense must be made independent.
At sea, sanctions became actual interdiction. AfterLondonauthorizedthe boarding of sanctioned shadow-fleet vesselsin March, the Royal Marines and the National Crime Agencyseized controlof the tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel, in international waters and in coordination with France: the first British operation of its kind. Other states had already stopped individual vessels, butthe precedent lies in moving from lists to physical enforcement within a declared legal framework precisely what moscows commercial apparatus fears most.

The price is documented. In September 2024, the National Audit Officevaluedstockpile donations at no less than 171.5 million and estimated replacement costs at 2.71 billion. Then there is the strategic cost:the presence of the Yantar near undersea infrastructure, lasers directed at RAF aircraft, GPS jamming, sabotage, criminal proxies. The patternshowsthat moscow considers London a strategic adversary, not simply one donor among many.
That is exactly whydistinguishing black from white has become indispensable. Western public discourse has produced a linguistic mush in which aggression, self-defense, negotiation, and responsibility mix until they lose their meaning. Used on its own, the noun conflict erases the cause and direction of a war that the United Nationshas definedas aggression against Ukraine, one that began in 2014 with Crimea and the Donbas. The phrase russian-Ukrainian conflict places the two states on the same grammatical plane and omits who crossed the border. In our appearances on Italian radio and television, the war of aggression that we experience firsthand has repeatedly been presented to us from afar as a conflict.
russian bombs do not fall on a territory disputed between two equivalent actors. They fall on the cities of an internationally recognized state invaded by another.
The visit to moscow by Paul Richard Gallagher who arrived, indeed, on Independence Day makes that distortion plain. On August 25, standing beside Lavrov at the first in-person meeting at this level in five years, hecalledit urgent and necessary to end the conflict andannouncedhumanitarian cooperation on children affected by the war: with the foreign minister of the state that deported those children, without naming the deportations.
Every appeal to the parties should instead specify what is being asked of russia: end the aggression, withdraw its forces, free prisoners and deported civilians, return the children, accept territorial integrity.Without these verbs and this subject, the formula becomes material that russian propaganda can reuse.

The same structure appears in American statements. At the Security Council, the U.S. representative to ECOSOC, Dan Negrea, congratulatedUkraine on its independence beforeinvitingboth sides to halt attacks on civilian ships andaskingmoscow and Kyiv to return to the table. Protecting civilian vessels is an obligation of every belligerent; turning equality of humanitarian obligations into equality of political responsibility is a different operation. And there is no military solution is only half true:moscow has spent twelve years trying to impose a political solution by military means, and an agreement reached under occupation and bombardment formalizes coercion rather than eliminating it.
There is, finally, a historical root that London shares. On December 5, 1994, Ukraine, russia, the United States, and the United Kingdomsignedthe Budapest Memorandum. In exchange for denuclearization, Ukraine received security assurances, not Article 5.Kyivhad inheritedroughly 1,900 strategic warheads and thousands of tactical warheads already transferred to russia by 1992 andrelinquishedthe worlds third-largest nuclear arsenal.
British support therefore expresses, before generosity, the responsibility of a signatory a responsibility London has interpreted more consistently than many others have.
The distinction also appears in energy policy.Since January 1, 2023, the United Kingdomhas bannedimports of russian LNG. In the first half of 2026, European Union ports insteadreceivedroughly 9.97 million metric tons from Yamal, 16 percent more than the previous record, worth nearly 6 billion, with spot contracts banned only in spring 2026 and the full ban expected in 2027.Britains stain must also be recorded. According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, ships owned or insured in the United Kingdomfacilitatedrussian LNG exports worth tens of billions of pounds for years, with the ban on maritime servicesimplementedonly in 2026.
The British have made mistakes and will make more: insufficient stockpiles, production delays, maritime contradictions. Sanctifying London would be as useless as dissolving it into the indistinct mass of allies. Yetthe hierarchy of facts remains clear: arms before the invasion; multinational training in 2022; tanks, depleted uranium, pilots, and deep-strike missiles in 2023; the first G7 agreement and the right to strike the sources of aggression in 2024; interdiction of the shadow fleet, missile technology, and artificial-intelligence data in 2026.
At every step, London turned the political risk of going first into a collective possibility and forced the reluctant to explain their delay. That is why russia monitors it, threatens it, and describes it as a belligerent.russia invaded Ukraine and Ukraine is resisting. That must be stated plainly, along with the fact that some countries have assumed greater responsibilities than others.Calling these facts by their names prevents propagandas linguistic mush from erasing the difference between those who wage a war of aggression, those who suffer it, and those who genuinely help stop it.

In 1.643 days of war, we recorded over 300 videos from ground zero and wrote more than 3,000 articles at least 1,600 in English, and over 1,400 in Italian.
Were doing our best to provide genuine, first-hand reports from zones where almost no press dares to go. This means living in a kill zone constantly. We take the risk, but without your invaluable support, our voices would remain unheard and silent. Without brave people sharing our articles from afar, they would remain unread. Our reports would go unseen, and our efforts would be lost. Theres still a lot of work to do here, as the people around us are also in no better situation.
Were renewing our fundraising campaign and thanking everyone who joins us in helping to restore what Russia is destroying. Moving forward, not even with a small reimbursement for each article we write, is extremely challenging. Thats why we are grateful to all the kind people who support us and trust in our mission.
Even a small donation helps.
Well keep you updated on developments.
Thank you all, dear friends ??

Giorgio Provinciali)
Giorgio Provinciali)
Giorgio Provinciali)
-在全面入侵发生前就开始提供武器;
- 2022年推动多国联合训练计划;- 2023年提供坦克、贫铀弹药、飞行员培训和远程打击导弹;
- 2024年签署七国集团首份双边安全协议,并支持乌克兰打击侵略来源的权利;
