老农家贫在山住，

耕种山田三四亩。

苗疏税多不得食，

输入官仓化为土。

岁暮锄犁傍空室，

呼儿登山收橡实。

西江贾客珠百斛，

船中养犬长食肉。

 

Ballad of an Old Tiller by Zhang Ji (Tang Dynasty)

 

A tiller bides in the hills, old and poor,

He toils upon meagre plots, three or four.

His scant crops taxed away, his household starved,

While in state granaries grain rots galore.  

The year ends, his hoes lie in the bare shed,

His sons climb the hills for acorns to store.

Merchants load their boats with hundreds of pearls,

Their dogs aboard feast on meat evermore.
