山坡羊·潼关怀古 – （元）張養浩

 

峰峦如聚，

波涛如怒，

山河表里潼关路。

望西都，

意踌躇。

伤心秦汉经行处，

宫阙万间都做了土。

兴，百姓苦；

亡，百姓苦！

Peaks loom as one massed crowd,

Waves, wrathful, roar aloud,

Girt by both, Tong Pass stands proud.

Afar toward Chang’an I gaze,

My thoughts linger in a haze.

O, ‘tis the majestic place —

Where Qin and Han once marked their trace,

Alas, all royal halls were turned to dust apace —

Dynasties rise, the folk bear pain!

Dynasties fall, the folk bear pain!
