A Lyric by Ye Yueming
Willow catkins drift, cuckoo cries fade,
Once more late spring tiptoes by.
I vividly recall those carefree days —
We talk, laugh, pluck flowers,
And tease grass, under the moonlit sky,
We sing songs, we write letters by lamplight,
All our love-laden words
Through rosy clouds fly...
Alas, none could have foreseen
We would be apart, like wind-blown catkins,
For fate undid our tie.
I seek those old traces, far and nigh,
Yet only tear-soaked dust
Concealed by the moss greets the eye.
Along the path, wind-whirling petals seize my skirt,
In misty drizzle, encircling each tree,
This lonely nightingale vainly heaves a sigh:
Half a life, rise and fall, in alien lands,
I wander, I toil; all I gain is hoary hair,
Which age has painted with its frosty dye.
Alone, beneath sunset, before green hills,
My soul dissolves in a silent cry.
