Member of the Board of the Brain Canada Foundation, One Drop, the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation and the International Centre for Youth Gambling problems at McGill. Co-chair of Riopelle Centennial celebrations. Previously Founding Chair of the Canadian Olympic Foundation and served on the Canadian Olympic committee, the bid committee, the Board of the Vancouver Organizing Olympic Committee and the Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). Previously Chair of the Society for the celebrations of Montreal’s 375th anniversary.

Studied Law and Economics at the University of Ottawa. Has an honorary doctorate of Law from Concordia University and is a member of the Order of Canada.

France Chrétien Desmarais

France Chrétien Desmarais CM (born July 5, 1958) is a Canadian lawyer and businesswoman. She is the daughter of Jean Chrétien, 20th prime minister of Canada.

Chrétien Desmarais is married to André Desmarais, president of the Montreal-based Power Corporation of Canada, and son of Paul Desmarais, a wealthy businessman.[2] They have four children.[3] One daughter, Jacqueline-Ariadne Desmarais, (b. January 23, 1990, Toronto, Ontario, Canada), married September 7, 2013, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Prince Hadrien Étienne Georges André Aldo de Croÿ-Rœulx (b. September 9, 1983, Uccle, Brussels, Belgium).[4][5] The direct descendant of Anne Emmanuel de Croÿ, the 8th Duke of Croÿ of the Solre.

Chrétien Desmarais and her husband donated money to build one of the tallest buildings on the University of Ottawa Campus. She was chair of the board of the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation and a graduate of the University of Ottawa. She is also currently chair of the Canadian Olympic Foundation as well as vice-chair of the One Drop Foundation.[6][3]

In 2011, Chrétien Desmarais was made a Member of the Order of Canada.

Power Corporation of Canada is a management and holding company that focuses on financial services in North America, Europe and Asia. Its core holdings are insurance, retirement, wealth management and investment management, including a portfolio of alternative investment platforms.[3]

History

Power Corporation of Canada was formed in 1925 by two stockbrokers – Arthur J. Nesbitt and his partner, Peter A.T. Thomson. Nesbitt served as the company's first president. Power Corporation was created as a holding company to manage their substantial investments in public utility companies involved in the electrical power industry in Quebec's Eastern Townships, plus in the other Canadian provinces of OntarioManitobaNew Brunswick and British Columbia. In the latter part of the 1930s, the company acquired a controlling interest in Bathurst Pulp and Paper Company Ltd., and in 1938, Canadian Oil Companies Ltd., selling the latter to Shell Oil Company in 1962.
