To today, it has been 2 weeks since I got my 2nd moderna vaccine shot. Psychologically I didn't feel much difference in the past 4 weeks and will not feel in the future either. I got my shots since I was encouraged by people I know, by securing knowledge about these vaccines.
Two weeks ago, on my way home after vaccination, I stopped by at town library and borrowed 3 books about state CT and New England area. These books can only be held in my hands for one more week, but I only read a small portion of them.
“Literary Connecticut” is one of the 3 books I borrowed. This morning after breakfast, I started reading it. “Literature is well enough, as a time-passer, and for the improvement and general elevation and purification of mankind, but it has no practical value”, As Connecticut’s own Mark Twain put it so sarcastically.
As a small state, CT’s healthy condition of literature is more noticeable than in some places, a surprising 183 libraries spreading in 169 towns. I am not a literary person ever, from Chinese text book, I knew Mark Twins. From film screen, I knew “Uncle Tom’s cabin”. I have visited Mark Twins’ house years ago when I accommodated myself in CT. Today I know another distinguished female writer, Harriet Beecher Stowe. HARRIET beecher Stowe is the writer of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. She was born in Litchfield of CT on June 14, 1811 , and died on July 1, 1896 in Hartford, CT. Her father, a minister of Litchfield gave her big influence. Her mother, a kind and graceful woman died when she was a girl. She only recalled a few incidents about her mother that “ twinkle like rays through the darkness” . for young Harriet, the early years instilled in her a strong sense of kinship and a commitment to others. She also absorbed a love of learning and a fascination with writing from her father who has a library of his own.
Reading here, I thought about some reputable Chinese Writers. I have to say" Family’s influence indeed played an important role on their way to success. The influence is potential. it will stay in the bodies like seeds, some day the seeds will grow into plants, big trees. "
Litchfield is a remarkable historical town in Western part of CT. I visited there once years ago. Now after years of feeling the state, I recalled the scenes in Litchfield town center. Those one or two floors white buildings must be around 200 years, they are still functional and are used as restaurants, gift stores, bars…Studying more, I know the first law school of US, William and Mary law school was established in Litchfield too. No wonder Reputable detective 李昌钰 settled down there with his second wife years ago.
