监狱劳动在美国不仅普遍，而且是宪法允许的

 

监狱劳动是美国宪法第13修正案明文允许的：Penal labor in the United States is explicitly allowed by the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

因为罪犯的劳动可以不付工资或者付很少的工资，监狱工厂/农场是一门很赚钱的生意。最赚钱的是德州的监狱劳工系统，因为德州规定可以对监狱劳动不付任何报酬。即便是待遇最好的联邦监狱，工资也就是每小时$0.23 到US$1.15 而已 （2007年数据），相当于美国劳动最低工资的1/10不到。

蹲监狱如同度假一般的北欧国家，嘲笑一下中国的监狱劳工还有情可原。美国在这个问题上指责中国，用美国自己的成语讲，真是The pot calling the kettle black 了。
