I came across Dido Belle through the wonderful portrait of her. She looks so full of life, beautiful and with such a glint of mischief in her eyes I suspect she would have been a most captivating person to know. Thank you for the wider back story about her. Really informative.

Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love.

After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

Wonderful to watch this Black female director at work! Loved the movie, too!!!

Men Denied Marrying Her Due To Color; Turns Out She Is Richest Girl In Town

I Love that in this era her father acknowledged his child and just went and took his child out of slavery and brought her straight home, forsaking all else, standing up for her and what he loves.

It's a shame how COLOR was/is a sin in the eyes of ignorance.

I love that Elizabeth never turned on her Black sister, Dido, in a society, that tells her she is better and afforded more opportunity. Elizabeth saw and treated Dido as her equal and protected her, never making her feel "less than". I fully expected the storyline to have them turn on one another in that societal class and racial divide, but I was pleasantly surprised and touched when they didn't. ??

This movie did the real life of Dido a grave injustice and needs to be remade in a way that truly reflects her life and the indignities she suffered. It's a disgrace and a dereliction of responsibility to portray a true historical figure, especially one of rare mixed parentage in this time period, so untruthfully. I advise everyone to read the Wikipedia about Dido. The real Dido was not loved equally by her family. She was not left any inheritance by her father, and Lord Mansfield left her very little on his death, barely enough to afford a servant of her own. No good marriage was secured for her. She was treated very well in comparison to other children of slaves, but if you read the real history, it becomes apparent that she was still treated as lesser than. She deserved that story of her life to be told truthfully.

@talllala  hey just to let you know, you should do more research about the topic. Wikipedia is not a good source. She was left money by her uncle around 40,000 which was significantly less than her cousin but still a good chunk of money. Was she treated 100% equal? Absolutely not and I think the movie portrays that well. And she did marry and have kids later in life.

To clarify, Dido's father, John Lindsay, did not leave her any money in his will. He ignored her existence after dropping her off with his uncle and only left money to his white children.
Lord Murray, on the other hand, was the one to leave Dido with a large inheritance. The Murray family is accurately depicted in this movie, as they did raise Dido as their own child, treated her equally, and loved her as family. Lord Murray explicitly stated in his will that Dido was a free woman and left her a trust fund. Comments can be found in the diaries and reports from other nobles and gentry at the time about how the Murrays kept a "mulatto" woman in the household, and to everyone's astonishment, she was dressed, educated, and treated like any upper-class English woman would be.

@indiadavis4435  you are false! Wikipedia is a way better source than a Hollywood movie, that's for sure.

Her great uncle left Dido £100 a year and £500 (equivalent to about £40,000), while he gave her cousin in total £40,000 (equivalent to £3,6 million) and possibly more. The movie didn't portray anything well since it's completely inaccurate fantasy opposite to the real history, in real life, her great uncle and the entire family never acknowledged Dido publicly or brought her out, even her own father, Lindsay, didn't acknowledge Dido in his will or in any other form so he actually left Dido nothing, not a single penny, when he died (Dido was 27 when he died, and Elizabeth was already pregnant with her third child at this time). Since Dido was never out in society, she only married after Lord Mansfield died and when she was 32 years old to a penniless servant immigrant from France, who most likely married Dido for her little money, and then he remarried after Dido died to a poor maid 2 decades younger than Dido, the implication of marrying a servant was that you would also be of that class, so after her marriage, Dido was of a servant class. In contrast, her cousin Lady Elizabeth married a rich heir to the Earl of Winchilsea; her son was the 10th Earl. If her husband outlived his first cousin, Elizabeth would've been Countess of Winchilsea and ranked alongside or slightly higher than her family.

the movie was nothing but Hollywood fantasy

@Satu-zs7gm  You’re completely misinformed. Wikipedia is not the ultimate source, and claiming that a Hollywood movie is “completely inaccurate” is, quite frankly, a bit dramatic.

First, yes, her great uncle, Lord Mansfield, left Dido £100 a year and £500, but this wasn’t insignificant, especially considering the time period. While her cousin might have received more, Dido’s financial security wasn’t lacking. Lord Mansfield provided her with a life insurance policy so she wouldn’t “want for anything,” which is far from being neglected. He wasn’t obligated to give her any of his fortune, but he did, so claiming otherwise is simply wrong.

Now, regarding her father, Sir John Lindsay, it’s true that he didn’t directly acknowledge Dido in his will. But let’s be clear—Lord Mansfield’s support was much more significant than Lindsay’s absence. To act like Dido was completely disregarded is just misleading. Dido was raised in a prominent household, and while it was complicated due to racial dynamics, she had access to opportunities that many others, particularly those of her race, didn’t have.

As for the idea that Dido “married a penniless servant” « immigrant French » BE FR you’ve clearly missed the point. John Davinier wasn’t some lowly servant; he was a steward, and their marriage was based on genuine affection. So claiming he married her for money? You literally said that she was poor and then you say he is there for her money? 1. You contradict yourself so that proves the level of your arguments and 2. It is absolutely not said anywhere that he was there for the money; he had servants himself In fact, one of his servants was called « Julia Leary ». Learn how to do research.

Finally, let’s not forget that Dido lived in her own house, comfortable and independent, until her death. It’s ridiculous to reduce her entire life to some tragic narrative that fits your preconceived notions.
