Life Dates of Johann Strauss Jr. [1]

 

1825 Born in Vienna on October 25, was the eldest son of 7 children.

1848 His parents separated.

1848-1849 Took composition lessons from Drechsler [2] and Kohlmann [3]. First appearance as a conductor and composer.

1849 Death of his father.  The father’s orchestra was merged with the son’s orchestra.

1861-1878 Married Henriette Treffz.

1863 Appointed as the music director of the imperial and royal court ball [4].

1870 Death of his mother.

1872 Concerts in America.

1878-1883 Married Angelika Dittrich.

1884 Large celebrations in Vienna for the 40th anniversary of his music career.

1885 Married Adele Strauss (died in 1930).

1889 In October, the 25th anniversary of Blue Danube Waltz [5] was celebrated in a concert together with the military bands, conducted by Strauss before 15000 listeners.  

1894 In October, the 50th anniversary of his music career was celebrated as a festival in the whole world. Strauss became the honorary member of the friends of the music society in Vienna.         

1899 On May 22, the last public appearance: Strauss conducted the overture to Die Fledermaus [6] at the court opera [7].

1899 On June 3, shortly after 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Strauss died in Vienna. On June 6, he was buried at the central cemetery near Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms in an honorary grave of the city of Vienna.
