For MRNA, there were meaningful early signs before today’s surge.
Most important breadcrumbs:
January 20, 2026
Moderna/Merck announced 5-year Phase 2b melanoma data for intismeran + Keytruda. It showed 49% lower risk of recurrence or death, and they said Phase 3 melanoma data could come in 2026.

Early 2026 shareholder letter
Moderna said oncology would become a major value driver, with multiple intismeran readouts, including Phase 3 melanoma data potentially in 2026 and possible launch preparation if positive.

June 1, 2026 ASCO update
Moderna/Merck presented detailed 5-year Phase 2b data: 49% reduction in recurrence/death and 59% reduction in distant metastasis/death. That was a strong validation before today.

June 1, 2026 JCO publication
The Phase 2b five-year update was also published in Journal of Clinical Oncology, giving it more scientific weight than ordinary company promotion.

My reflection: the best early signal was not one single news headline. It was the combination of durable Phase 2b benefit, named asset intismeran, active/known Phase 3 trial, company guidance pointing to 2026 data, and weak market attention before the confirmation event.
In other words, today’s news was the confirmation. The better opportunity was recognizing the Phase 2 durability + Phase 3 pending setup before today.
