Hate: v. tr.
1.
a. To feel hostility or animosity toward.
b. To detest.
2. To feel dislike or distaste for: hates washing dishes.
Hate在圣经里有多重意思，不是我们一般所认为的咬牙切齿的“恨”。即便查现在的英文字典也一样能看出来。就像字典里给的动词的第2个意思。To feel dislike or distaste for: hates washing dishes。
而路加福音14：26中的”hate” to mean loving to a lesser degree.比如创世纪29：31-33When Jehovah came to see that Le´ah was hated, he then opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. 32 And Le´ah became pregnant and brought a son to birth and then called his name Reu´ben, for she said: “It is because Jehovah has looked upon my wretchedness, in that now my husband will begin to love me.” 33 And she became pregnant again and brought a son to birth and then said: “It is because Jehovah has listened, in that I was hated and so he gave me also this one.” Hence she called his name Sim´e·on.
这里的”hate”是dislike或者loving to a lesser degree （compares to Rachel），可以翻译成冷落或者不受宠，如果Le´ah真是被嫉恶如仇，咬牙切齿地恨，她怎么可能和雅各生孩子呢？同理，申命记21：15 “In case a man comes to have two wives, the one loved and the other hated, and they, the loved one and the hated one, have borne sons to him, and the firstborn son has come to be of the hated one”,以弗所书5：28-29 In this way husbands ought to be loving their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself, 29 for no man ever hated his own flesh; but he feeds and cherishes it, as the Christ also does the congregation。这里的”hate”包括路加福音14：26都是loving to a lesser degree的意思。
出埃及记20：12要孝敬父母。以弗所书6：1“你们做儿女的，要为了主的缘故服从父母。这是正义的：第一条带应许的命令说，“要孝敬父母，这样你就必蒙福，在地上得享长寿。””如果路加14：26翻译成恨，不是和上面的经文自相矛盾了吗？所以比较好的翻译是“谁到我这里来，爱我不胜过爱自己的父亲，母亲，妻子，儿女，兄弟，姊妹，甚至自己的性命，就不能做我的门徒。”
