讲一个最近发生在我身边的故事。
我在本村图书馆做义工,是一个“Friends of the library” 的非营利组织。我们村里图书馆的新书大部分是这个组织筹款购买的。而我是在这个组织在图书馆门口的一个小吃部工作。这个小吃部卖一些零食,snacks,cup of soup, 饮料,咖啡等等,义工管理,所有profit全部捐给图书馆。小吃部是honor system,义工只管将食品饮料标价后放在外面,顾客自觉投币取物。主要顾客是放学后来图书馆做作业的中小学生和带小娃来听故事的保姆们及来图书馆上网消磨时间的退休老人。几十年来,这个系统一直works well。直到最近,尤其是这个星期。比如周三下午,我值班时,一个黑女走过来,各种零食都拿了一份,又从冰箱里拿了饮料,却一分未付。我提醒她,“do you need change?”She said:”no, I’m alright.”转身捧着一堆东西进了图书馆。结账时我发现,现金箱里只有不到$30元的现金,而柜台上少了$65元的小吃和饮料。
这就是我亲身经历”零元购“的故事。因此我发了电邮给所有的义工,结果星期四的义工说,她值班时投币箱里只有不到40元钱而柜台上少了$120的食品。义工组长昨天紧急通知,因为最近的情况,小卖部下星期停业一周。不知这个几十年来每年为图书馆创收上万的小卖部是否就会因为”人心不古“而寿归正寝。

3. Another lady asked for a cold coke, and why I was emptying everything. I told her about the loss we were incurring. As I handed her the coke, she quickly grabbed two water bottles and hurried to the door, without paying. I almost wanted to go after her, but she was fast, I was frustrated. As I was leaving the library, I saw her in a car and I wanted to approach her but then I stopped, the car was broken multiple places and had a ton of stuff in it. I left sad.

也许这就是我前面提到的同一位。看来是个homeless,这星期盯上我们这个小卖部了。其实真正的homeless有food bank和shelter提供吃住,绝对不会饿着。可她有车却连food bank都懒得去。
