I'm generally not interested in 5K running. However, I participated with my son in this year's Dadfest 5K run. I teamed up with my son to form a Dad & Child team. Dadfest is an anual event that creates a forum for Dads and their families to gather together to celebrate their lives, their health and their importance to the family. The proceeds of the event will go to UREF for Prostate Cancer Research. Before the race, my was reluctant to go for he had not run for a long time. I showed him the (see below) video posted on the event web site and let him know that our fee will go to charity. What I asked for him was just to complete the course, either run or walk and did not worry about the run time. We finished at the seventh place in our team age group.
The running course is only 5 kilometers, but my thought did not stop at the finish line. I felt grateful that I'm still alive, healthy, and have a job. My son is still growing physically and acedemally. He was doing better in the past year at school than he was doing in previous year. Best of all, I can still run and have finished a marathon course already. :-)
Don't underestimate the power of running. Several year ago when I started "my running business", I was looking for inspirations. One of the stories that touched me and motivated me to keep running is the story of Team Hoyt. Here is a video of their story that was run on TV years ago.
Posted last month at www.people.com, there is story titled "Dick Hoyt, 72, And Son Rick, 51, Complete 1,000 Races for Charity". (URL: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20696318,00.html)
From Hoyt's and other stories, I strongly believe that running can really change people's lives in positive ways. We will come back to the Dadfest again next year, being stronger and happier.
Finialy I would like to share a song by Jim Croce who wrote the lyrics in 1970 after his wife told him that she was pregant with his son.
Time in a Bottle
If I could save time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save every day Till Eternity passes away Just to spend them with you
If I could make days last forever If words could make wishes come true I'd save every day like a treasure and then, Again, I would spend them with you But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do Once you find them I've looked around enough to know That you're the one I want to go Through time with If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that had never come true The box would be empty Except for the memory Of how they were answered by you But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do Once you find them I've looked around enough to know That you're the one I want to go Through time with
