It's a bit unfair to decry the film's historical inaccuracies then offer only trifling examples, or none at all. Here is what the historical record is quite clear on: John Rabe was elected head of the Nanking Safety Zone -- in large part because of his Nazi party membership and his prominence in the large Nanking community of expatriate businessmen. He, and the safety zone he ran, are credited with saving up to a quarter million civilian lives. Rabe opened the doors of his own properties so that additional hundreds could be saved. His diary is testament to his disgust with the Japanese Army's treatment of Chinese civilians during the Rape of Nanking. But perhaps greater testament is offered his tireless advocacy for the victims, and his very public efforts to bear witness to the attrocities, upon his return to Germany. For this Rabe was arrested and treated with great suspicion by the Nazis. A real personal tragedy given Rabe's overall loyalty to the Nazi party and his tragically mistaken belief that Hitler would intervene on the side of humanitarian decency! His tragedy was compounded after the war, when the allies denied him "De-Nazification" status. He died penniless in 1950. So, this man deserves accolades, and this film is mostly accurate on the details that matter.Rabe ran this special zone, and the zone saved hundreds of thousands of Chinese lives. He was true to that spirit on his return home, and it cost him dearly. The Japanese have never owned up to their treatment of Chinese civilians, or of Allied POWs, during the war they started in Asia. But do enjoy this film without guilt. It is not some whitewashing of the historical events dramatized therein, or of Rabe's role in them. It certainly doesn't shy away from his Nazi affiliation or the character's period-accurate racist attitudes.
